Episode 2 of the series ends with a cliffhanger. The first scene of episode 1 shows that a certain malfunction of a robot caused it to kill several people in a room. The final shots of episode 2 imply that Suzie’s husband, Masa, could be involved in covering up that incident. While the synopsis of the series reads:

“The life of an American woman living in Kyoto, Japan, is upended when her husband and son disappear in a mysterious plane crash. As consolation, she’s given Sunny, one of a new class of domestic robots made by her husband’s electronics company.”

Sunny episodes 1 and 2 breakdown

As episode 1 starts, the viewer learns that Suzie's husband and their only child have disappeared in a plane crash. However, no detailed reports are presented about the fate of Flight 405, and one of the questions that keeps coming back in the two episodes is whether such an accident even occurred.

Suzie, lonely and in extreme grief, takes to compulsively drinking and eating snacks. One evening, she gets a gift from her husband’s robotics company — a highly intelligent robot designed especially for Suzie by her husband.

The first big reveal of the show is made here: Suzie learns that her husband was not in the business of making refrigerators, but robots. Naturally, she finds it odd that he never mentioned it.

Intrigued, Suzie ventures into an investigation on her own, going to her husband’s company, Imatech, and asking around about him. She sneaks into the incubator of the company and finds a room where she sees a tragedy that recently occurred. This is the same incident the beginning shots of episode 1 showed.

One of the recurrent themes of the series is the nature of the relationship between human beings and robots. Suzie does not really like the titular robot, no matter what the latter does for her.

She even goes so far as to abandon it at a lonely place. However, a prominent message of Sunny is that robots reflect the nature of their creators. As a result, Suzie starts warming up to her robot as the latter starts exhibiting the mannerisms of Masa.

Episode 1 ends with the exposition that Suzie is being watched by a mysterious man, and he is reporting the same to a higher authority. As episode 2 starts, Suzie and Sunny have teamed up to find out what may have been going on with Masa and his secrets.

The show is filled not just with moments of emotional intensity but also with light-hearted banter that produces some refreshing humor. For instance, as Suzie is rampaging through Masa’s study in order to find out more about his work, Sunny starts breaking things down.

When questioned by Suzie, the robot replies that it thought dirtying the room was what they had been trying to do. Suzie takes Sunny’s advice and goes to Imatech where she emotionally blackmails a former colleague of Masa’s into giving her entry into the enigmatic Division 5 of the floor. She again goes to the same room as before and sees traces of blood there.

She narrowly escapes being found out by the security thanks to the cleverness of Sunny. Back home, Suzie receives a pair of shoes from the airline company. The shoes are said to have belonged to Masa. This throws Suzie into a fresh bout of depression.

In a poignant scene, Suzie asks Sunny to accompany her while she sleeps. The robot lovingly puts its arm around Suzie to comfort her. The closing shots of episode 2 are a dream-sequence dreamt by Sunny that implies that Masa was involved in covering up the gory incident shown at the beginning.

While the endings of episodes 1 and 2 leave more questions unanswered than answered, they effectively set the stage for the plot to unfold.

As the credits roll, the viewers are left pondering over questions like “What was Masa’s role in the gory event teased in both episodes?”, or if Masa is alive and watching the events unfold from a distance and who could be stalking Suzie, and for what reason.

Episodes 1 and 2 have shown flashes of the loving relationship between Masa and Suzie, and their son, through several flashbacks. The show might present more of these in the coming episodes. Also, Suzie’s relationship with her mother-in-law could be explored further.

It remains to be seen how Suzie and Sunny get along in the coming episodes. So far, after a rough start, she has started loving her domestic robot. Meanwhile, the mysterious scene shown at the beginning of episode 1 will eventually be explained as the story progresses.

The next episode of the series, titled Mmmm, Hinoki, will be released on July 17, 2024, on Apple TV+.
