Superman & Lois season 4 opens with a dramatic death twist, setting off a chain reaction of speculation

Superman & Lois season 4 premiered on The CW network on October 7, 2024. Being the final season of the show, it picks up with the finale of season 3, where Lex Luthor comes back from prison and turns Bizarro into Doomsday. This leads to Superman fighting him, and the fight eventually makes it into space, where the monster and the Man of Steel battle each other.

With season 3 ending on a cliffhanger, Superman & Lois season 4 picks up from that point, with Superman and Doomsday battling in space and eventually making it to Mars. The big twist with the opening of season 4 is that Superman ends up losing his battle with Doomsday and dies in the process. Doomsday then takes Superman's heart and delivers it to Lex Luthor, who keeps it to himself.

However, with the season premiere having confirmed that Superman is dead now, a wave of speculation has been going on online, with many wondering whether the Man of Steel is actually dead or not.

Given that Superman & Lois season 4 is doing a loose adaptation of Death of Superman and what came after it, it is likely that Clark isn't exactly dead right now. In the comics, Superman died at the hands of Doomsday but eventually returned, donning the classic Black Suit and a mohawk.

How does Superman come back to life in the comics?

While Superman & Lois season 4 may have showcased that Superman is dead, the Man of Steel eventually does make a return from his death in the comics. Following the Death of Superman storyline in the comics, the Reign of the Supermen arc begins. This arc sees four pretenders of Superman pop up, with two being evil and the other two being good.

One of those Supermen happened to be the Eradicator, a killer robot from Krypton who stole Clark's body and took it to the Fortress of Solitude. There, the Eradicator put Superman's body into the regeneration matrix, which allowed him to get Kal-El's energy, but it also slowly revived him from death. This led to Superman coming back to life in the comics.

However, it is important to note that Superman & Lois season 4 does end up playing things differently.

How can Superman & Lois season 4 bring back Superman to life?

In episode 2 of Superman & Lois season 4, it is revealed that Superman can be brought back to life if his heart is returned to his body. But Lex Luthor destroys the heart, making that impossible. At Clark's funeral at the Fortress of Solitude, it is revealed that he made a hologram of himself in order to guide his sons, but this also complicates his return.

So far, Clark hasn't been put into the regeneration matrix, and it also doesn't look like the show will be following the Reign of Supermen storyline. However, given that Doomsday is still alive and has Kryptonian DNA in him, perhaps the show will see the Kents try and retrieve his heart so that Clark can be brought back to life.
