The latest addition to Netflix's Holiday catalog, That Christmas is now available on the streaming platform. Based on Richard Curtis' children's book trilogy That Christmas and Other Stories, the movie premiered at the BFI London Film Festival in October and was released on Netflix on December 4, 2024.
That Christmas is the directional debut of Simon Otto, best known as the Head of Character Animation for the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy. Written by Richard Curtis and Peter Souter, the movie features the voices of Brian Cox, Fiona Shaw, Jodie Whittaker, Bill Nighy, and more.
One of the key charms of the movie is its festive songs and nostalgic music. The film's musical score is composed by Grammy-nominated composer John Powell, renowned for his work on films like How to Train Your Dragon and Happy Feet. That Christmas also includes an original song by Ed Sheeran, titled Under the Tree, which he co-wrote with Johnny McDaid.
Speaking about his inspiration for the song with Tudum by Netflix, Sheeran said,
"It felt so good to create something my children would watch, with their uncle, based in the country they live in. This is going to become a holiday staple, at least in our household. Hope everyone loves it and enjoys the song — we had such a great time creating it.”

Plot Summary
Netflix's That Christmas is set in the fictional seaside town of Wellington-on-Sea and focuses on three interconnected stories that explore love, family, and holiday magic. The overlapping characters and shared settings are similar to Curtis's other holiday classic, Love Actually.
Santa Claus, voiced by Brian Cox, is the narrator of this comedic holiday mishap. One plotline focuses on a lonely boy worried about his Dad not making it home in time for Christmas, the other revolves around twin girls, whose names get exchanged on the naughty list and the nice list. There are also other storylines, centering around multiple characters.
Curtis talked about his hopes for the movie in an interview with Tudum by Netflix, saying,
"I hope it’ll remind people of the joy and complexity of Christmas, and some of the joys and comedy and heartbreak of childhood. And then there’s a very special thing for me, that the film takes place in a town very much like my own in Suffolk. I hope they’ll love the sense of the place — and go away with a new, delightful, simple English world in their heads.”
