The Boys season 4, episode 8, ended by finally answering the questions about Butcher’s supe powers. The latest episode titled Assassination Run, served as the season finale. The first 3 episodes of season 4 of The Boys premiered on Prime Video on June 13, 2024.
Butcher has been battling a brain tumor since the season 3 finale of The Boys and in the latest installment, it was speculated by Butcher that the Compound V he took last season didn’t work or cure his condition. Throughout season 4 he became more sick and eventually accepted that he was running on borrowed time.
However, when he killed Ezekiel and came back from his trance state, he did not remember what had happened to him. Season 3 confirmed Butcher to have superpowers after taking Temp-V and sharing mostly the same powers as Homelander. However, in the later episodes of season 4, it's revealed that Compound V has finally worked on Butcher.
In the last episode of The Boys season 4, Kripke finally showed the viewers what they had been waiting for. A glimpse of Butcher's superpower and his confrontation with Neuman was shown, which resulted in a bloodbath. Butcher's new ability is Tentacle-like appendages, that could drive him to kill all the Supes in the upcoming final season.
Butcher's new abilities in The Boys season 4 finale explored
In the latest episode, Butcher killed Victoria Newman with his newly acquired superpower. Tentacle-like appendages came out of Butcher’s chest and wrapped around Neuman’s body and head.
He then tossed her up and then tore her body into two pieces, slaying her. The tentacles then moved back inside Butcher and after Frenchie tried to shoot him with his gun, he confirmed to Frenchie and Mothers Milk about how he had taken compound V earlier.
During this season, it was discovered in the earlier episodes how he was hallucinating Joe Kessler trying to guide him after MM fired him from the boys. During season 4 episode 6, it was revealed that it was actually his V’ed up tumour talking to him throughout the season taking the form of Kessler.
Kessler and Becca in this season have been portrayed as the yin and yang of Butcher’s psyche. Becca was the reasonable one and always asked Butcher to do what was right by keeping collateral damage to the minimum. Kessler on the other hand is the manifestation of what needs to be done to get a permanent solution.
Could there be Homelander vs Butcher?
In The Boys Season 4, episode 8, after Butcher explains Homelander’s true intentions to Ryan, he asks him to go with Grace. Grace and Butcher try to explain to Ryan that he is the only deterrent against Homelander.
Ryan is shocked and tries to walk off during the verbal spat with Grace where he asks her to give him some time to think about it. Grace threatens Ryan by saying that she will use halothane on him and take him out if he doesn't accompany her. Ryan tries to walk off from the conversation and pushes Grace which leads to her death.
Seeing this Butcher finally accepts Kessler's deal about going all out and killing every supe in the world, and finally unleashes his true power. Season 5 or the final season of The Boys could possibly present a stand-off between Homelander and Butcher. Both of them have very different powers, yet are overpowered like each other.
Fans are anticipating to see how the showrunner Eric Kripke delivers the series by adapting from the comics, in its final season. The Boys season 4 is now streaming on Prime Video.
