Bam Margera was born on September 28, 1979, and was brought up in the neighborhood of West Chester, Pennsylvania. As per a Big Bro Interview article, he was originally named Brandon Cole Margera. He got his stage name Bam from his grandfather, for his habit of running and climbing on walls. Margera was a gifted skateboarder, ever since he was a kid, and soon began doing stunts along with his friends.

In 1993, Bam Margera's father, Phil, bought him a video camera after he and his friend Chris Raab joined a digital media class. According to a 2001 Tribune News Service article, Margera met Brandon DiCamillo, Art Webb, and Ryan during these classes, all of whom became key contributors to his film journey.

The friends, who shared a love for skateboarding, often hung out at the skatepark. Margera began filming their skateboarding stunts, creating the CKY (Camp Kill Yourself) video series, named after his older brother Jess Margera's rock band. Jess later became a rock musician.

The CKY videos started to gain popularity, and in 1999, Margera independently released a CKY film named CKY: Landspeed. The film was a collection of skateboarding videos put together, added with music by the CKY band. This also featured numerous skateboarding stunts, special tricks, and sometimes pranks, which quickly grew popular among the youth audiences.

Over the next few years, the group together released four more films, featuring Margera, Dunn, DiCamillo, Rabb, Brandon Novak, and Rake Yoh, who came to be known as the CKY crew. Slowly, their group started getting noticed by skateboarding brands, and music labels, which eventually provided Margera, with his life-changing project.
