The Diplomat season 1 on Netflix concluded with a major cliffhanger that viewers are eager for the second season to address. The audiences might recall that last season ended with a large explosion, one that was reminiscent of the blast that occurred earlier in the season.
The season finale of The Diplomat season 1 did not disclose the magnitude of the explosion's impact on those affected, nor did it explicitly reveal the identity/identities of the individual(s) responsible for it. However, it did suggest that Kate Wyler's potentially estranged husband, Hal Wyler, was dead, as flames consumed the vehicle he was in along with his colleagues.
On October 8, 2024, the trailer for The Diplomat season 2 was released, which clarified these speculations by indicating that Hal was seriously injured but still alive. The trailer also gave a glimpse at Kate and Hal being their authentic selves, i.e., at each other's necks.

What happened in the concluding episode of The Diplomat season 1?
As highlighted previously, the closing episode of The Diplomat season 1 ended with a big bang, one that was created by a huge explosion involving the former US ambassador to Lebanon and Kate's husband, Hal Wyler, and two of his colleagues.
The explosion occurred when Kate had just discovered the identity of the person who had caused the blast on the British ship that killed several soldiers in the pilot episode of the season. Kate concluded, based on multiple pieces of evidence, that British Prime Minister Trowbridge was behind the explosion.
However, before she could pass on this important piece of information to her husband or anyone else, the explosion took place, which put the lives of Hal, Stuart, and Ronnie on the line.

Is Hal alive after what happened in The Diplomat season 1?
It looks like Hal Wyler is still alive after the events of season 1 of The Diplomat. Even though the explosion in the final episode appeared to be fatal, it seems that Hal and the others were fortunate enough to escape with injuries.
This was also shown in the trailer for The Diplomat season 2, where Hal is seemingly alive in a hospital, though with injuries that are in line with the severity of the explosion. The confirmation of Hal's survival was also reported by Tudum on October 18, 2024, when the publication verified that Hal was indeed alive.
Talking about the specific explosion that put Hal and the others on the line, creator Debora Cahn told Netflix's Tudum:
“I wanted it to make people want more. I wanted to bring together all of the different dynamics of the political relationships and the personal relationships in one event that splits apart all at the same time.”
Cahn's comments were echoed by Rufus Sewell, who plays Hal Wyler. He said:
“All I know is that if you resolve it one way or another too quickly, we’re screwed. I like to think there are enough problems to last us [a few seasons].”
The Diplomat season 1 undeniably left a couple of loose ends untied. Season 2 of the series will likely explore these matters and offer explanations to the viewers. Additionally, the upcoming season is also expected to bring some chaos of its own, as suggested by its trailer. Season 2 is scheduled to premiere on October 31, 2024.
