The anticipation for The Diplomat season 2 is palpable, with both fans and the production eagerly awaiting its return. With the series debuting at #1 on the Netflix Top 10 list and racking up over 57 million hours of views in the first weekend since its April 20, 2023 premiere, fans are eagerly awaiting its sophomore season.

It has captivated the audience that only ten days after the season premiere, Season 2 was already confirmed. The series showrunner, Debora Cahn, expressed her excitement about going back for a second season in a press statement shared with Deadline:

“I am thrilled to be headed back for another round of this smart screwball show. Dare I say it’s fun? Thank you, Netflix, for giving us another shot.”

The Diplomat season 2 will be the follow-up to the eight-episode political thriller starring Keri Russell as Kate Wyler, an American diplomat and US Ambassador to the UK working with her diplomat husband trying to stop a war following an Iran bombing incident by a British aircraft carrier.

The Diplomat season 2 is coming in 2024

Production of Season 2 was previously reported to have started last year with the cast and producers meeting US Secretary Antony Blinken at the US Embassy in London. However, with the SAG-AFTRA strike, which lasted for 118 days, filming was halted in July before resuming in December.

Good news for waiting fans, Netflix has shared an investor letter, as per Deadline, sharing when Season 2 is coming. It said:

“Looking ahead, despite last year’s strikes pushing back the launch of some titles, we have a big, bold slate for 2024.”

While Netflix has confirmed the 2024 release window for Season 2, it remains unknown when exactly the show’s sophomore season is coming to Netflix.

It wouldn’t be The Diplomat without “the Diplomat,” and thankfully, fans can expect Keri Russell to reprise her role as the reluctantly appointed ambassador to the UK, Kate Wyler, in Season 2.

Whether the rest of the cast from season 1 will reprise their roles in the upcoming season is yet to be determined. Rory Kinnear is expected to return as Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge after the revelations in the Season 1 finale. The fate of the rest of the main cast, Rufus Sewell, Ato Essandoh, Simon Chandler, David Gyasi, Ali Ahn, Miguel Sandoval, Nana Mensah, and Michael McKean, however, remain in limbo.

That said, Keri Russell had teased a reunion with her The Americans co-star and real-life husband Matthew Rhys for Season 2. When she was asked if Rhys would be joining her in the second installment of the political drama during a 2023 interview with The AVClub, Russell said:

“Oh yeah, absolutely. He’s good, right? He’s so fun to work with. I would love to. If The Diplomat gets a second season, maybe we can lure him our way. In fact, when we were filming last summer, I asked him, ‘Don’t you want Debora to write something for you? What would you do?’”

The Diplomat season 2 is expected to pick up after Season 1 cliffhanger finale

The final moments of Season 1 gave viewers plenty to talk about and speculate about. With Kate and Austin’s discovery of the person behind the bombing of the aircraft carrier, Prime Minister Trowbridge, they didn’t have much time to digest the information before a car bomb went off, which may or may not have killed Hal, Stuart, Ronnie, or all three.

Talking about the previous season’s cliffhanger ending, actor Rufus Sewell who starred in the show as Kate Wyler’s husband, Hal Wyler said:

“All I know is that if you resolve it one way or another too quickly, we’re screwed. I like to think there are enough problems to last us [a few seasons.]”
