Season 2 of the German historical drama The Empress will premiere on Netflix on November 22, 2024. Created by Katharina Eyssen, the series follows the life of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, known as 'Sisi,' a fascinating figure in 19th-century European royalty.
Historically, Elisabeth von Wittelsbach was the daughter of Duke Maximilian Joseph and Princess Ludovika of Bavaria. At the age of 15, the Bavarian Duchess met and fell in love with her cousin, Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria, who was initially to marry her older sister Helene. Franz Joseph and Elisabeth were married, leading to a sudden shift in her life as she entered one of Europe’s most powerful royal courts.
The first season of the show debuted on Netflix on September 29, 2022. It was a huge success, and for two weeks it was Netflix's second-most-watched series worldwide. It was immediately renewed for a second season in November 2022. The show also won the International Emmy Award for Best Drama Series in 2023.

Plot Summary
Following the events of the previous season, Empress Elisabeth and Emperor Franz Joseph are confronted with new difficulties in season 2 of The Empress. Elisabeth is under increasing pressure to have a male child as preserving the empire's future becomes vital, and Franz must contend with a formidable foe in Europe.
The official synopsis for the second season reads,
"The first crisis is barely over and the young couple wants to enjoy their fresh marital bliss when dark clouds gather over Schönbrunn Palace: Franz (Philip Froissant) unexpectedly faces a powerful adversary in Europe. And Elisabeth (Devrim Lingnau) comes under great pressure, because an heir to the throne is to secure the future of the empire as quickly as possible."
It continues,
"When fate strikes with all its power, the couple's love threatens to finally break apart. And Elisabeth must fight not only for her family, but also for the integrity of her soul."
What happened in The Empress season 1?
The Empress season 1 followed Elisabeth's journey to becoming an Austrian royal. Throughout the season, Elisabeth struggled with the pressures of court life, and her relationship with Franz Joseph which started with love, got difficult over time. Meanwhile, discontent with the monarchy was rising, and there was growing unrest among the Austrian people.
The first season ended with a dramatic cliffhanger when Elisabeth got an ultimatum from Archduchess Sophie to either have her marriage annulled or comply with the strict rules of nobility. She found out she was pregnant and went to tell her husband, but she got to know that he agreed with his mother. Heartbroken, Elisabeth decided to go back to Bavaria.
Towards the end of the finale, just as she was leaving the palace, a crowd gathered at the front gate protesting against the Emperor. Against the advice of everyone, Elisabeth opened the gates and went among the crowd, proclaiming 'I see you' and announcing her pregnancy. The season ended here, leaving much room for the fans to speculate the course of The Empress season 2.
