The riveting finale of the American science fiction television series Dark Matter ended on an ambiguous note. Created by Blake Crouch and based on his 2016 novel of the same name, this Apple TV+ series has enthralled the audience with its smart twists and turns.

The ninth and final episode of season 1 of Dark Matter, 'Entanglement', was released on June 26 on Apple TV+ exclusively. However, there is good news for the fans who held their breath as they watched the finale, and are now craving for something similar.

Wayward Pines is another mystery science fiction television series based on the works of Blake Crouch. The series premiered on Fox on May 14, 2015, and ran for two seasons. Wayward Pines explores several themes also found in Dark Matter, such as traveling to an alternative reality, facing strong adversities in this new reality, and undertaking a complex quest to return to the original world. Apart from the similarity in the themes, the treatment of the two protagonists and the fact that both works are based on books by the same author, make Wayward Pines a must-watch for the fans of Dark Matter.

Why Dark Matter fans will enjoy Wayward Pines

Although the second season of Wayward Pines did not follow the books by Crouch and took an independent turn, its first season asks similar questions as asked in Dark Matter. Both series aim to understand what it means to navigate between different dimensions and alternate realities when the subject going through the adventure is not fully aware of its implications beforehand. Both Ethan of Wayward Pines and Jason of Dark Matter are mysteriously transported to alternative realities where they must improvise and adapt to their realities in order to survive and solve their problems.

In both the series, the protagonists wake up in parallel universes with no memory of where they came from. Additionally, in their respective stories, both are on a mission. While Ethan must investigate the disappearance of his two fellow agents, Jason enters the box to find out more about the volunteers who had entered previously.

Both Ethan and Jason struggle to return to their original worlds which is made harder by the layers of mysteries they must untangle first. Both series deliver a similar message to their viewers: one cannot succeed in solving a difficult riddle without help from the new world. While Ethan is helped by Berverly, Jason is assisted by his parallel-universe partner Amanda.

Family is an important theme in both the stories. In fact, Crouch gives both Ethan and Jason a similar family structure. The bond they share with their respective families, acts as a strong force that keeps the protagonists going, amid obstacles.

Wayward Pines plot

The first season of Wayward Pines, which concluded on July 23, 2015, promises to interest the admirers of Dark Matters. It follows Ethan Burke, a U.S. Secret Service agent (played by Matt Dillon) who mysteriously ends up in the eponymous town of Wayward Pines in Idaho after being given the task of investigating the disappearance of two of his colleagues.

Things start taking a grim turn when Ethan finds that one of his colleagues is dead, and the other one, whom he had seen just weeks ago, claims that she has been living in Wayward Pines for twelve years. Having no memory of how he ended up in Wayward Pines, Ethan soon realizes that the town has a sinister secret as it is surrounded by an electrified fence and none of the residents are allowed to contact the outside world.

The strange circumstances of Wayward Pines are disclosed in the fifth episode of season 1, called 'Truth'. Ethan sets out to solve the mysteries and search for the truth as he tries to reconnect with his wife and teenage son. He has to face the challenge posed by the strict Sheriff Arnold Pope. The finale of season 1 sees Ethan making a commendable sacrifice as he tries to make things right. However, like Dark Matter, Wayward Pines season 1 also ends with questions left unanswered.
