NBC’s The Irrational is a crime drama that revolves around Alec Mercer. The series premiered its first season back in September 2023. Created by Arika Mittman, the series stars Jesse L. Martin and Maahra Hill in lead roles. It released a total of 11 episodes in the first season. Now, season 2 recently premiered on October 8, with its first episode titled Collateral Damage.

The Irrational has the following official synopsis:

“Alec Mercer is a world-renowned behavioral scientist who lends his expertise to an array of high-stakes cases involving governments, law enforcement and corporations with his unique and unexpected approach to understanding human behavior.”

Episode 1 of season 2 picked things up exactly where season 1 left things. The episode finally revealed the identity of Rose’s abductor. It led Professor Alec Mercer on a daring mission to save her, as a thrilling climax set things up for an even more entertaining episode 2.

The Irrational season 2 opener leads Alec Mercer on a suicide mission

Episode 1 quickly delved into the identity of the kidnapper. Rose was kidnapped by none other than Gavin, who turned out to be the husband of Fiona. Fiona was killed during an M16 operation that Rose supervised, leading Gavin on a mission for revenge.

Gavin’s plan is revealed to be in the works for years, and he pulls off a delicate abduction after involving Rose’s former handler, Harry. Taking in both of them captives, Gavin tortures both Harry and Rose, until the latter admits that his wife’s death was in fact, ‘collateral damage.’

However, instead of letting them go, Gavin proceeds to shoot Harry in front of Rose. This suggests that Rose’s time is also running out. However, she is saved after Alec grows suspicious of her continued absence. When Rose fails to show up on their date and doesn't respond to messages, he takes help from one of his most prominent allies, FBI agent Marisa, portrayed by Maahra Hill.

The two’s investigation eventually leads them to Gavin, and Alec comes up with a risky plan. He positions himself near his home to arouse Gavin’s suspicion, who takes him hostage as well. This initially buys Rose time, as she reveals further information about Fiona’s death.

As it turns out, Fiona was also working with MI6 and had contacted the team to turn over some of her relatives who were involved in illegal activities. However, the mission ended up falling through, leading to Fiona’s death. Rose also reveals the guilt she feels and attempts to appease Gavin.

However, Alec appears well aware that the two of them only have limited time and ends up convincing Gavin to move them to a new location. This happens after he promises to reveal the names of the officers responsible for Fiona’s death. Alec ends up giving Gaving the coordinates of an MI6 building.

Once Gavin realizes the same, he plans to blow up the building. The three travel to the new location in Gavin’s van, which is tracked down by the FBI just in time. Gavin is killed quickly in an encounter, as Alec and Rose eventually escape.

The episode ends with Rose communicating her newfound guilt to Alec. She believes that their relationship might end due to her dangerous work, and then reveals that she has to leave for Dubai for a new mission. Alec, however, reassures her, and the two kiss towards the end.

Hence, rather than a breakup, the ordeal seems to have pushed the two main characters ever closer. Episode 2 of The Irrational season 2 will premiere on NBC on October 15, 2024.
