The Last of Us season 2 drops first trailer taking viewers on a heartbreaking dystopian journey 

HBO’s The Last of Us, based on the video game series of the same name, is set to return with season 2 sometime in 2025. However, even as fans eagerly awaited the release, HBO did not disappoint on September 26, an iconic day for fans of the series. The date marks the outbreak of the Cordyceps virus present in the original video game. On September 26, 2024, HBO released the first season 2 trailer to mark the occasion.

Promising an intense ride that once again features the likes of Joel and Ellie, The Last of Us Season 2 will also introduce Catherine O’Hara as a therapist who will help the former. The series boasts of the following official synopsis:

“After a global pandemic destroys civilization, a hardened survivor takes charge of a 14-year-old girl who may be humanity's last hope.”

While the newly released trailer did not reveal a lot of information about the upcoming season, it did feature multiple intense scenes. The trailer kickstarted with an intense exchange between O’Hara’s character and Pedro Pascal’s Joel.

The Last of Us season 2 is set to release in 2025

The trailer itself begins with an exchange between Catherine O’Hara’s unnamed character, and Joel. Catherine claims the following, before kicking things off during the session:

“You want to start or what? Let’s try something different; you can’t heal something unless you’re brave enough to say something out loud. Say the thing you’re afraid to say.”

Season 1 ended with viewers finding out that Ellie will have to die to save the world from the outbreak. Joel fails to answer, and the screen then pans to various shots of Bella Ramsey’s character, hinting at Joel’s grief.

Further, in addition to Catherine O’Hara, the trailer also gives fans their first glimpse of Kaitlyn Dever’s character, Abby Anderson. Video game fans will already know how important Abby turns out with respect to the upcoming narrative of The Last of Us.

Regardless, the 2-minute and 7-second watch then delves into a variety of intense scenes that fans can expect in the upcoming season. While none hint at what’s to come, the protagonists are once again seen traveling across towns, mountains, and forests.

The trailer concludes by panning onto another emotional moment between Joel and Bella, with the latter playing a guitar. This scene in particular is a direct tribute to an iconic video-game scene as well. Hence, fans can expect season 2 of The Last of Us to also stay close to the source material.

That effectively sets up an even more heartbreaking narrative which will lead Joel to make multiple sacrifices with respect to his friends and allies. Season two will be delving into where season one left things off. Joel and Ellie survived an encounter with the Firefly group, who were looking to make use of Ellie’s immunity to survive the infection and create a cure.

Joel, however, decided to kill the Fireflies and was intent on leading his 14-year-old friend to safety. The trailer concluded by confirming the release window, with The Last of Us season 2 now confirmed to be released sometime in 2025.
