The ending of The Lincoln Lawyer season 3 indicated some disturbing news for Mickey Haller, who was still riding high on the victory of successfully defending his client Julian La Cosse in court. The latter was accused of murdering Gloria Dayton, also known as Glory Days.

While traveling back from the success party of the case he had won, towards the end of The Lincoln Lawyer season 3, Haller was stopped by a police officer and asked for his vehicle's license, registration, and insurance papers. He was asked to present the documents owing to a missing license plate on his car, which the officer notified him about by taking him to the back of the vehicle.

While they were at it, the officer suddenly noticed blood dripping from the sides of his car and asked to open the trunk for inspection. When Haller resisted, the officer placed him in handcuffs and opened the trunk, discovering the body of his former client, Sam Scales, inside.

The previous seasons of The Lincoln Lawyer always foreshadowed great challenges for Mickey Haller in the upcoming installment, and this season was no different.

In the final moments of the concluding episode of The Lincoln Lawyer season 3, the blood-soaked body of Sam Scales was discovered in the trunk of his car by a police officer.

For those who might not remember, Sam Scales, often dubbed as one of Haller's most notorious clients, was reprimanded in season 1 of the show. He faced consequences for illegally acquiring money from people under the guise of allocating finances to aid economically deprived communities.

Throughout the course of the season, Scales made several appearances while being questioned for multiple fraudulent activities, including raising money for victims of mass shootings. However, his arc came to a close with season 3 of the show when his character was found dead in the trunk of Mickey Haller's car.

What does Sam's death mean for Mickey Haller?

Sam's death in The Lincoln Lawyer season 3 spells trouble for Mickey Haller in the upcoming season of the show. Haller had previously joked about killing Sam in front of an audience, which could be used against him as evidence relating to Sam's death, especially since the latter's body was discovered in Haller's trunk.

This means that Haller is now left to defend one of his most important clients to date, i.e., himself, which seems to be the most difficult one yet. While it is clear that Haller did not kill Sam, the identity of the actual perpetrator remains a mystery. Viewers suspect the culprit could be someone with a grudge against either Sam, Mickey, or both.

What happens to Sam Scales in Michael Connelly's books?

Michael Connelly’s fifth novel in The Lincoln Lawyer franchise, titled The Law Of Innocence, divulged the details of the person behind Sam Scale's death. In the book first released in 1998, it was revealed that mobster Louis Opparizio had killed Sam and framed Mickey Haller for his death.

During the investigation of Sam's case and Haller's efforts to prove his innocence, Haller discovers that Opparizio killed Scales after one of the latter's schemes failed. The scheme involved raising money by falsely claiming to convert used cooking oil into biofuel. Opparizio had suffered financial losses because of Sam's actions and took revenge on him by killing him.

Has The Lincoln Lawyer season 4 been confirmed?

As of writing this article, there has been no official confirmation concerning future installments of the Netflix series. However, during an interview with TV Insider on October 17, 2024, developer Ted Humphrey mentioned that he is interested in creating season 4 of the series, depending on the audience's response to The Lincoln Lawyer season 3. He said:

"I mean, we’re in the hands of the audience, right? We’re quietly optimistic about it, but obviously, with Netflix, it always depends on how the current season goes. And so I would say to our fans and viewers of the show, if you want a fourth season, which we very much want to bring you a fourth season, then by all means watch and tell your friends."

All episodes of The Lincoln Lawyer season 3 are currently streaming on Netflix.
