Episode 5 of The Old Man season 2 was released on FX on Hulu on October 3, 2024. The fresh plot developments up the ante on the principal characters of the thriller series; both Dan Chase (Jeff Bridges) and Harold Harper (John Lithgow) must now face the consequences of their past actions, even as the various crises in the present keep them awake with terror.
The latest episode of The Old Man season 2 opens with Emily Chase (a.k.a. Angela Adams) arriving at the decision that she wants to stay on in Afghanistan. However, by the end of the episode, it is very likely that she is dead.
The synopsis of episode 5 on Hulu reads:
“Chase, Harper and Zoe take refuge in Harper's house only to receive tragic news.”
Besides Emily’s apparent fate, the latest episode also exposes the shaky marital life of Harper and Cheryl. Further, it portrays something hitherto rarely seen in the show—Dan’s vulnerability. In all, the events that unfold in the latest episode take a heavy toll on the main characters of the series.
The Old Man season 2 episode 5 ending: Emily is most probably dead
The episode opens in Afghanistan as Faraz Hamzad’s body is buried and the final rites are performed. An emotional Emily is seen attending the ritual, and the shot fades out to reveal a letter she writes to the late Hamzad. The content of the letter is divulged to the viewer through a voiceover by Emily.
In the letter, Emily expresses her wish to stay on in Afghanistan and help the people fight off the Taliban. As the episode progresses, Emily bids goodbye to Tarik and Farouk. Her decision is a significant one because it is the corollary of the back-to-the-roots trajectory her character has had in The Old Man season 2.
Towards the conclusion of the episode, Dan finally manages to connect a call to Emily. A distraught Emily reveals that the Taliban has arrived at the Afghan village through the secret tunnels. This confuses Dan since the Taliban is not supposed to know of the existence of the tunnels in the first place.
Emily’s call gets disconnected abruptly, following some terrified screams and shouts. Therefore, it is likely that the Taliban has killed her. Dan breaks down after this.
The Old Man season 2 episode 5 shows Harper’s failing marital life
Towards the beginning of the episode, Harper is distraught since his daughter-figure Emily has decided to stay back in Afghanistan. He arrives at his home in Washington along with Dan and Zoe. Episode 5 of The Old Man season 2 shows that back at home, his wife, Cheryl, is grappling with her own frustrations.
For instance, Cheryl is frustrated with the deeply secretive nature of Harper's job. Also, the death of their son, Chip, dug a hole in their relationship. The last nail in the coffin seems to be the fact that, thanks to Harper’s job, their house has become a potentially dangerous site. As a result, their grandson, Henry, no longer stays there since Cheryl thinks the place is unsafe for them.
Cheryl’s decision to move Henry to his maternal grandparents’ home upsets Harper. Cheryl, in turn, is upset that Harper has brought in two strangers to the house without having informed her of it beforehand. Thus, their marriage is breaking down, and the process of its gradual decay is brought out in The Old Man season 2 episode 5.
Some truths come to the fore in the new episode
Right before Emily’s phone went dead, several noisy men could be heard over the call. Interestingly, the language these men conversed in was not Dari or Pashto but Russian.
This little detail helps Harper and Dan deduce that the belligerent party is not the Taliban but the Russians (which explains how they could know about the tunnels since the Russians stayed in Afghanistan for long during the Soviet-Afghan war).
Further, Harper and Dan kidnapped an assassin from the site where Morgan Bote was killed. In the new episode, the assassin reveals that besides Mote, he was also tasked with killing Dan and Zoe. These facts suggest that Suleyman Pavlovich is heavily involved in both the affair of Afghanistan and the murder of Bote.
The Russians, led by Suleyman Pavlovich, seem to be the antagonists in The Old Man season 2. The next episode, which will be released on October 10, 2024, might reveal more on the same.
