The Penguin received a new trailer on June 20, 2024, as the show prepares to be streamed on Max this September. The upcoming series is a spinoff to Matt Reeves' 2022 reimagination of The Batman.
The director had kickstarted his version of the franchise with Robert Pattinson in the role of the famous caped crusader of Gotham City. Batman's longstanding foe Penguin was one of the surprise appearances in the film played by Colin Farrell.
The new trailer for the spinoff series The Penguin features a visually stunning Gotham in the aftermath of The Riddler's (Paul Dano) plans to destroy the city. It provides a glimpse of a gritty Gotham City, true to the comics.
The trailer showcases how The Penguin, created by Lauren LeFranc, will take a look at the seedy Gotham underbelly while the mob bosses fight to fill the power vacuum left by the death of Carmine Falcone (John Turturro).
It also featured new characters such as Carmine's daughter Sofia Falcone (Cristin Milioti), his son Alberto Falcone (Michael Zegen), and the infamous Gotham mob boss Salvatore Maroni (Clancy Brown).
When does The Penguin come out?
As per HBO, the series is scheduled to premiere on Max in Fall 2024. The producers are yet to announce an official release date for the series. However, the newly released trailer has confirmed that the series will premiere on the streaming service in September 2024.
The upcoming series is highly anticipated as it takes viewers back to the fascinating Gotham created by Matt Reeves in The Batman. The film is scheduled to have a sequel which is currently undergoing production. As per reports, the studio has confirmed that The Batman II has seen some production delays and will not be released in theaters before 2026.
When is The Penguin set?
The Penguin is set in the same timeline as the events of The Batman. The final moments of the 2022 film saw Gotham City get washed out by a flood caused by the destruction of nearby dams and a disruption in the sewage system of the city.
This was caused by The Riddler, who was ultimately stopped by the Batman. The events of the upcoming series are set only one week after the events shown in the film. With Carmine Falcone out of the way, it will be time for Oswald "Oz" Chesterfield Cobblepot, a.k.a. the Penguin to stake a claim as the boss of the criminal underworld of Gotham City.
Is The Penguin a sequel to The Batman?
The upcoming series by Lauren LeFranc is treated as a spin-off series rather than a sequel to the 2022 film. However, it does directly follow the events shown in the film, as mentioned earlier. The crime-drama series will follow events between The Batman and its upcoming sequel film The Batman II (currently under production).
The upcoming series is expected to have a total of eight episodes, which will follow the rise of Oswald "Oz" Chesterfield Cobblepot as one of the most notorious criminals in the history of Gotham City.
The trailer already teased intense moments following the events of The Batman with Penguin stating that he will be the one "calling the shots" in the city. However, his rise is not without complications as Falcone's daughter Sofia is also eyeing the top spot in the criminal world of Gotham City.
The series features an ensemble of actors including Rhenzy Feliz as Victor Aguilar, Michael Kelly as Johnny Viti, Shohreh Aghdashloo as Nadia Maroni, Deirdre O’Connell as Francis Cobb, Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni, James Madio as Milos Grapa, Scott Cohen as Luca Falcone, Michael Zegen as Alberto Falcone, Carmen Ejogo as Eve Karlo, and Theo Rossi as Dr. Julian Rush.
The Penguin is set to be released on Max this Fall, in September.
