The first episode of The Penguin, titled After Hours, premiered on HBO and Max on September 19, 2024. Set 1 week after the events of The Batman, the episode focused on Gotham dealing with being flooded as gang violence rises up and amidst the death of Carmine Falcone, a power vacuum was left open as well with Gotham's worst trying to make a play for it.
At the end of The Batman, fans got to see Gotham be flooded, and The Penguin explored the direct effects it has had on the criminal underworld. With the Drops business being a bust as a lot of the product had been contaminated due to the flood, Oswald Cobblepot was forced to take sides as his business was at risk of being shut.
The first episode of The Penguin introduced viewers to even more characters and brought in big personalities from comic books like Sofia Falcone and Sal Maroni onto the screens. Viewers were also introduced to Victor Aguilar, a new character.

Oswald Cobblepot kills Alberto Falcone
The first episode of The Penguin started with viewers looking at how The Riddler's flood had impacted the city and how the Falcone family was dealing with Carmine's death as well. With Alberto Falcone - Carmine's son - set to take over the reins, Oswald Cobb decided to go to the Iceberg Lounge and raid his old boss' stash, however, he was met by his new boss there.
Oswald's new boss accused him of trying to steal, but he lied, claiming he was welcoming him into his new position. Alberto then told Oswald he planned to revolutionize Gotham's drug trade, but insulted him, leading Cobb to shoot Alberto.
While trying to dispose of the body, Oswald found Victor Aguilar, a homeless kid, attempting to steal his car tires. Initially threatening to kill him, Oswald instead used Victor to hide Alberto's body. Later, Oswald took Victor under his wing, making him his enforcer and driver.
Introduction of Sofia Falcone
Oswald was then called to the Falcone house in The Penguin episode 1. There he got the news that his Drops business was about to be shut down as the family didn't want to risk a gang war. Disappointed by the news, Oswald tried to sell Alberto's idea of revolutionizing the drug business as his own to the family, but then he met Sofia Falcone who had just been let out of Arkham.
Sofia asked Oswald if he knew where her brother was and took him out for lunch. During the meal, she questioned why he had passed off Alberto's plan as his own, growing suspicious of him. Oswald admitted Alberto told him about the plan but said he didn’t know where her brother was. The meeting ended with Sofia hinting she knew Oswald had killed him.
Fearing for his mother’s safety, Oz went to her house to ensure she was out of the city. He and Victor then made a plan in case the Falcone family came after him. Oz later visited Sal Maroni in prison, asking for his help, but Maroni refused. The meeting ended with Oswald giving Maroni the ring that Falcone used to wear leaving the mob boss shocked.
Sofia gets the message
Following his meeting with Sal Maroni, Oswald was then followed by Sofia and her enforcers who believed that he knew what happened to Alberto and was keeping the information from them. After a brief chase, Oswald was eventually caught by Sofia who stripped him naked and started interrogating him. Still believing that he knew what happened to Alberto, she started torturing him.
During the torture, a car crashed into the Falcone household. Sofia went to check the disturbance and found Alberto's mutilated body in the trunk, and she screamed in shock.
The episode ended with Oswald and Victor getting slushies, revealing it was their plan all along. Oswald then told Victor they would go after the incoming drug shipment and wanted him involved.
Going into the next episode of The Penguin, fans can certainly expect to see Oswald make a play for the incoming drug shipment. Alongside that, the can also expect to see his relationship with Victor continue to grow further.
But also at the same time, a gang war is definitely about to brew as Sal now has the Falcone family ring, and Sofia will point her fingers at whoever she thinks is responsible. The transformation of Oswald into The Penguin has begun.
