Matt Reeves and Lauren LeFranc are set to take us back to Gotham this week as The Penguin is set to debut its first episode on September 19, 2024, on Max and HBO. The series starring Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobb will be a spinoff of The Batman and will see the supervillain trying to make a name for himself within the criminal underworld of Gotham following the death of Carmine Falcone.
The release of The Penguin will be the first official continuation that fans will be receiving of Matt Reeves' The Batman universe. Alongside that, it will also be building up this new villain that we got a glimpse of in the 2022 film, and fans can expect to see the rise of this mobster as Gotham deals with the death of this biggest crime lord.
Alongside this, fans can also expect to see exactly how the city deals with the flooding that was caused by The Riddler at the end of The Batman. Not to mention, the extended Falcone family and the Maroni crime family are set to be introduced here too.
Here's what fans can expect from The Penguin episode 1
The Flooding of Gotham
The first thing fans can immediately expect from The Penguin episode 1 is to see how Gotham is dealing with the flooding issue. At the end of The Batman, fans saw Riddler blow up the sea walls which caused Gotham to be heavily flooded leading to heavy chaos. With the upcoming DC show just taking place a week after the film, fans will be able to see exactly how the city is coping with this issue.
Among the flooding, maybe fans will also get to see how crime in Gotham has perhaps gotten worse now. With floods and more, criminals will surely be active in the time as Gotham will be at its weakest.
The rise of a power struggle
Carmine Falcone is dead now thanks to The Riddler. Alongside his death, it was also revealed that Falcone was the rat all along which further revealed the fact that he helped get Maroni in jail too. With his death, the biggest crime spot in the city is open, and the criminal scum of Gotham will definitely be gunning for it.
We can expect Oswald to come in as well in The Penguin and try to claim that spot. However, he will also have to deal with Sofia Falcone as well - Carmine's daughter and Salvatore Maroni too, however, with him being in prison it'll be interesting to see where that leads.
Fleshing out Gotham crime families
In Matt Reeves' The Batman, we just got to see Gotham from Batman's point-of-view, but with The Penguin the city can be even further fleshed out. The Penguin will be introducing us to the extended Falcone family and fans will get to see the inner workings of how crime works in Gotham and how Oz will be able to navigate through this as well.
But, that's not the only crime family fans will get to see as the show will also introduce Salvatore Maroni which will further showcase the other big crime family in Gotham.
