The Penguin episode 2, titled Inside Man, premiered on HBO and Max on September 29, 2024. The episode featured Oswald Cobb as he tried to make sure that the Falcones didn't figure out that he was the rat working for Maroni. Alongside that, the episode also featured Sofia Falcone as she struggled with her brother's death and grew further skeptical of her own family.
The Penguin episode 2 was another great outing for the show - and in some ways, even trumped the first episode. An hour of tension filled with excitement and nail-biting suspense is further elevated by Colin Farrell's great performance, which is also complemented by Cristin Milioti's unhinged showcase.
While the performances, of course, shine in The Penguin episode 2, the real highlight of this week's outing is the funeral set piece which provides much of the excitement here.

The Penguin episode 2 features a brilliant funeral set piece
In the second half of episode 2, The Penguin showcases its true excellence. With Alberto Falcone's funeral taking place, anything that can go wrong for Oswald goes wrong here. From his cover being at the risk of being blown to the Maroni family breathing down his neck, it's filled with tension that helps make this episode stand out so well from the premiere.
It's genuinely interesting plot where fans will often find themselves being on the edge of the seat waiting to see how Oswald gets out of the situation, and this is where the direction of Craig Zobel and the writing of Erika L. Johnson works the best.
Not only that, but the situation helps develop Colin Farrell's version of the DC villain too because it helps showcase him as someone smart and intelligent, but also conniving who will do anything to get out of a bad space.
Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti shine in The Penguin episode 2
This directly leads into how good Colin Farrell is in this episode as well. Farrell puts on another masterclass where you completely forget where the actor begins and the character ends. Amidst that makeup, Farrell truly disappears and showcases Oswald's desperation to get out of a bad joint so well.
However, this week Cristin Milioti gets to show off her chops as well. While episode 1 was a great debut by her, she steps it up in episode 2. She still maintains that "ticking time bomb" feel to Sofia Falcone, but the cracks begin to show here. From eating maniacally in front of guests at her brother's funeral to becoming a menacing mess in a second - Milioti shows great range.
The character gets further development in this episode too. Wanting to prove herself, she decides to work against the Falcone family, and it really does get the viewer excited to get to see what's about to come next.
However, if there was a sore spot in this episode, then it would be that Rhenzy Feliz's Victor Aguilar doesn't get much to do here. While a scene at the end gets him to showoff his chops, Feliz remains underutilized this outing.
The production value looks great
One of the criticisms for last week's episode was that sometimes the production could look a bit of a downgrade when compared to The Batman, but this week The Penguin provides a great spectacle. Everything here looks great - from the cinematography to the way the sets look and it really helps make this version of Gotham feel alive.
Verdict
The Penguin delivers another great episode this week. A nail-biting hour of television that will have you on the edge of your seat - Colin Farrell's DC villain gets up in some exciting hijinks during a funeral while Cristin Milioti's Sofia Falcone continues to have a psychotic break that only spells doom for whoever may stand in front of her.
All-in-all, it's a brilliant set up for the next week's episode, and fans surely won't want to miss this one. The second episode of the DC Studios show is streaming on Max and HBO right now.
