The Penguin episode 4, titled Cent'Anni, premiered on HBO and Max on October 13, 2024, and took us back to the events of why Sofia Falcone was sent to Arkham. After it was revealed that it was Oswald Cobb who murdered her brother and was working with the Maronis, the episode flashbacked to 10 years back when the Falcone family was at the height of its power.

Warning: Spoilers for The Penguin episode 4 will follow.

With characters in the show referring to Sofia as The Hangman, The Penguin episode 4 showed us exactly how she got that name as well. The show earlier states that Sofia was responsible for killing seven women, with all of them being strangled/hanged. However, Cent'Anni showcases that it wasn't her behind the murders, but rather her father Carmine Falcone who is the actual Hangman.

Alongside that, The Penguin episode 4 also sets up Sofia Falcone as the new member of the Falcone family and teases that she will be trying to take the new top spot in Gotham's criminal underworld.

The Penguin episode 4 reveals that Sofia Falcone isn't the real Hangman

How did Sofia get The Hangman title?

The episode opens with the end of last week's episode, where the Maronis have Oswald and Sofia cornered, and once the former makes the escape, an injured Sofia calls Julian Rush for help and passes out.

Viewers are then taken 10 years back to Sofia endorsing a charity for mental health where a reporter approaches her inquiring about the women who had been killed at her father's club.

However, Sofia dismisses the reporter and goes back home. There, she reflects on her mother's death who dies of suicide by hanging herself, and then she decides to inquire about her to Carmine.

Sofia asks him whether he remembers her being depressed, and Carmine deflects her inquiries and tells her that he hates remembering old traumatic times.

Sofia then decides to meet the reporter again. The reporter reveals that all the women working at Carmine's club died of strangulation and showed signs of struggle as well.

Sofia then remembers that her mother's body showed signs of struggle too, but snaps out of the trance and threatens the reporter to drop this story otherwise her family will destroy her.

With Oswald being Sofia's driver, he asks her why she is meeting the reporter, and Sofia tells him to mind his business. Back home, during Carmine's birthday, Sofia is called into his office.

There, Carmine asks her why she was meeting the reporter, to which Sofia says that she found something suspicious about her mother's death. He tells her that she has betrayed her father before asking her to go back home.

On the way to her home, Sofia is stopped by cops who arrest her for the murder of the reporter and seven other women as well. This then earns her the name of Hangman as her father frames her for the crimes that he had committed.

The Penguin episode 4 then sees Sofia Falcone be sent to Arkham as her brother promises her that he will do everything to get her out. With Sofia having six months until she can get a trial, she is observed by the head doctor there and Julian Rush as well who is more sympathetic towards her.

On her first day at Arkham, an inmate attacks Sofia which she believes to be a ploy from the doctors.

Throughout those six months, Sofia is subjected to electroshock therapy and the doctors constantly turn a deaf ear to her cries of innocence. However, Julian then starts believing that she may not have committed the crimes for which she was arrested.

After six months, Alberto then meets Sofia at Arkham and delivers her the disappointing news that she won't be getting a trial as the doctors think she is unfit.

Taken aback, Sofia leaves the meeting room with Alberto asking her how he can help. Sofia then completely loses it and snaps at an inmate killing her and telling Julian that she feels betrayed and that she didn't commit any of the crimes.

Sofia takes over the Falcone family

The end of The Penguin episode 4 then takes viewers back to the present time, with Sofia waking up in Julian's house. There she tells him that she needs a fresh new start, and makes a speech at the Falcone family dinner, expressing her disappointment in how no one came to her help when they knew that she was innocent.

After the dinner, Sofia kills the remaining Falcone family in their sleep and spares Johnny Vitti for unknown reasons.

However, it certainly looks like the Falcone family has a new head, and she wants the top spot in Gotham's criminal underworld.
