The Penguin episode 5, titled Homecoming, was released on HBO and Max on October 20, 2024. The episode followed Oswald Cobb as he went after the Maronis family as Sofia Falcone had taken out the Falcone family. Sofia also took over the Falcone family but dropped the last name as she decided to take her mother's maiden name, Gigante.
The episode saw a lot of things going down, including Oswald taking out major players of the Maroni family, except Sal Maroni, who slipped. Cobb also managed to secure the Bliss drug. Meanwhile, Sofia Falcone figured out where Sal was and proposed an alliance with him to take over Gotham City and take their revenge on Oswald.
The Penguin episode 5 is mainly set up for what's to come in the second half of the show. Meanwhile, the seeds for a nasty criminal war in Gotham have been laid, and it looks like the worst is yet to come in the next few weeks.

What happened in The Penguin episode 5?
The Penguin episode 5 began with Oswald gathering his forces after betraying Sofia and trying to make a move on the Bliss drugs. However, before that, he needed to make a move on Maronis and started taking them out. To do so, he kidnapped Sal and Nadia Maroni's son and told them that if they didn't give up the Bliss, their son would die.
Oswald also bribed one of the security guards to stab Sal after killing his family, but Sal managed survive the stabbing and escaped from prison. Meanwhile, Oswald delivered Nadia's son to her and got his mushrooms in return, but it turned out to be a setup with Maroni goons getting a jump on him. However, he managed to dispatch them, and he killed Nadia and her son.
Oswald escaped with the drugs but only two boxes worth of mushrooms survived, as they needed a specific temperature to survive. Cobb also learned that Sal survived the stabbing and swore revenge on Oswald Cobb after learning that he had killed his wife and son.
Sofia takes over the Falcone family
Sofia Falcone's story in The Penguin episode 5 began with the Gotham City Police Department investigating the Falcone estate, as the family had been killed in an "accidental" gas leak. Sofia was the only survivor of the leak since she had killed them and told the police that she didn't know what had happened. She also told them that they shouldn't suspect her given what the family had gone through.
She then went to Johnny Vitti, who was locked up in the Falcone cemetery, and tortured him to give up Carmine Falcone's stash of money. However, Johnny made her a proposition and offered to help her achieve the respect of those in Gotham while delivering the money. Sofia agreed and later Julian Rush approached her, asking to be a part of the operation.
Johnny then set up a meeting with the rest of the Falcone goons and introduced Sofia as the new head in The Penguin episode 5, before she shot him in the head. She then told the goons that the family would now go by her mother's maiden name, Gigante, and she offered them Carmine's money by telling them that she would treat them better than her father ever could.
Oswald's new base of operations
Scared that Sal was alive, Oswald ordered Victor to take his mother someplace safe and he took her to Crown Point. Sofia visited Maroni and proposed an alliance with him by telling him that she wanted to end the war between their families and work together. With Oswald being a common denominator between them, they both swore to get revenge on him for what he did to them.
Down on his luck, Oswald then headed to Crown Point to meet Victor and his mom, who expressed disappointment in him. She told him that he couldn't do anything right and dismissed him.
Oswald then spoke about his past with Victor and mentioned his brothers. However, while going through his old stuff, he remembered the abandoned underground railroads in Gotham.
He took Victor down with him to explore them and The Penguin episode 5 ended with them, deciding that this would be the new base of their operations. They set up base as they realized they could grow the mushrooms they needed to make Bliss down there.
What can fans expect from The Penguin episode 6?
The Penguin episode 5 sets up the future of the series in a huge way.
With Sofia Falcone and Salvatore Maroni working together, the war between the two families has seemingly ended, and going forward they will be Gotham's top criminal organization. However, their main goal now will be eliminating Oswald Cobb and making sure that they can take him out.
This could only mean bad things for Oswald, as he still needs to build his empire. However, he does have Bliss to his name and now that he has a suitable environment to grow them in, he will certainly try to one-up Sofia and Sal as well.
