The Penguin season finale premiered on HBO and Max on November 10, 2024. Titled Great or Little Thing, the episode brought a close to the series while effectively setting up Oswald Cobb's new role in the upcoming The Batman - Part II. The episode follows Oswald Cobb as he tries his best to save his mother from Sofia Gigante while also trying to make his claim for Gotham.
A lot went down in The Penguin season finale, which ended with Oswald getting everything he wanted and becoming the new Kingpin of Gotham. With no one to stand in his way (aside from Batman, of course), Oswald has everything he wants now. But it also came at a huge price.
The Penguin season finale also features the deaths of some major characters and revelations that will surely have fans looking at Oswald in a new light. Aside from that, some major characters are mentioned here too, and some characters from The Batman make a special appearance as well.
What happened in The Penguin season finale?
Francis Cobb suffers a stroke
In The Penguin season finale, Francis Cobb suffers a stroke, which leaves her in a vegetative state by the end. The episode begins with a flashback scene where she reveals to Rex Calabrese that she knows Oswald killed his brothers. While Rex tries convincing her that someone like Oswald can achieve something if he puts his mind to it, Francis asks him to kill her son as revenge.
When she takes him dancing to Monroe's nightclub, Oswald promises her that he will give her everything she has ever wanted and this makes her change her mind about killing him. However, it is soon revealed that all these memories were being revealed to Julian Rush and Sofia too who use this revelation against Oswald so that they can hurt him.
Back in the present, Oswald is brought to Monroes where Sofia tortures him and reveals the fact that she knows that Oswald killed his brothers. However, she forces him to reveal this to his mother, or she will cut off one of Francis' fingers. Oswald still doesn't budge, which leads Francis to reveal that she always knew about him killing his brothers, and she hates him for it.
She then tells Oswald that she wishes she had let Rex kill him and then stab him in the gut. But she then suffers a stroke and falls to the ground with Oswald also escaping from Sofia's grasp and taking his mother to a hospital.
Sofia puts a hit on Oswald's head
Victor then tries to gather all the major gang members in Gotham to help Oswald, but with Sofia blowing up Crown Point, they refuse to help him. Instead, Sofia ends up calling everyone down to the Falcone estate, where she promises everyone the entirety of the Falcone fortune if anyone can bring Oswald to her first, as she intends to leave Gotham.
Victor is then called to the hospital by Oswald. He is ready to give up on his dream, but Victor convinces him to still fight for it. The Penguin season finale then sees Oswald go down to the Gotham courthouse where he tells the councilman Sebastian Hady that Sofia Falcone was responsible for the explosion in Crown Point and that she killed Sal Maroni so that he can bring them in.
While Hady is initially cautious of Oswald, he comes around to the idea that this would be good for his career. Oswald then, in return, asks that he be allowed to have his voice heard. At the same time, Zhao's enforcer Link contacts Victor in The Penguin season finale and notifies him about the bounty Sofia has put on Oswald's head.
Oswald outsmarts Sofia
Link and his men then arrive at the courthouse to take Oswald in. Sofia is notified by Zhao that they have Oswald, and she asks them to meet her at the airport. She then burns down the Falcone estate and arrives at the airport, where she sees that Oswald is being held at gunpoint. However, before she can do anything, Links kills Zhao and it is revealed that this is a setup and that Oswald has won the game.
He then drives Sofia to a secluded spot under the pretense of killing her. However, it is revealed that she is being arrested instead by the Gotham City Police Department, as Sebastian Hady was able to hold up his end of the bargain. While Oswald does become the Kingpin of Gotham, he ends up losing a lot as well.
Going back to the hospital to check up on his mother, he gets to know that her stroke ultimately left her in a vegetative state. This means that Oswald will never be able to get his acknowledgement from her, and she may just never forgive him for killing his brothers as well.
Who dies in The Penguin season finale?
The Penguin season finale also features a major death take place. The fan-favorite character Victor Aguilar ends up biting the dust in the final moments of the show as Oswald ends up killing him. After checking up on his mother at the hospital, Victor and Oswald go down to the park and sit near the water.
Oswald tells Victor how he wouldn't have been able to do anything without him and Victor calls him family. Oswald then tells Victor that this is why he can't bring him along with him because family will ultimately make him weak, and he then strangles Victor. He leaves his body there and then leaves the place.
So, for fans who were hoping for Victor Aguilar to appear in The Batman - Part II, it looks like that unfortunately won't be happening.
Does Batman appear in The Penguin season finale?
While fans may be hoping for Batman to appear in The Penguin season finale, that unfortunately doesn't happen. However, there is still a major tease towards him. The Penguin season finale ends with Oswald dressing up fancily and going up to his penthouse. He has moved his mother to be with him on the topmost floor and gives her the best view of the city.
The Penguin season finale's final scene then ends with Oswald dancing with Eve Karlo, who is dressed up similarly to his mother, while she tells him that she loves him and is proud of him. However, while Oswald is all comfortable in his penthouse, the Bat Signal shines bright in the sky as the episode cuts to the credits.
So, while Batman himself doesn't show up, The Penguin season finale still packs in a huge tease to the character. It certainly looks like Matt Reeves' The Batman - Part II will feature a lot of the Penguin himself.
Catwoman / Selina Kyle is mentioned in the episode
Sofia gets the worst punishment possible in The Penguin season finale as she is sent back to Arkham. But it doesn't seem all bad for her as she receives an unexpected mail that teases where her story may go next in this universe.
Julian Rush returns to Arkham and delivers Sofia a mail sent to her by Selina Kyle, her half-sister. With it being revealed in The Batman that Selina was the daughter of Carmine Falcone as well, fans can certainly expect to see Selina and Sofia interact with each other sometime in the future.
Fans can watch The Penguin season finale on Max right now.
