The Peripheral is a science fiction television series that premiered on Amazon Prime Video on October 21, 2022, following its world premiere in Los Angeles on October 11, 2022. After the success of its first season, the show was renewed for a second season in February 2023. However, the season was later canceled due to the prolonged SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes.

The plot of The Peripheral is loosely based on William Gibson's 2014 book of the same name. Both the book and the show follow the life of Flynne Fisher (played by Chloë Grace Moretz), who is struggling to make ends meet in a future that seems bleak for her and her family.

Flynne becomes entangled in a web of complications involving a Colombian company called Milagros Coldiron, where her brother Burton previously worked. The company deals with gaming simulations that are too close to reality, blurring the lines between the real world and the simulated world.

For example, in one instance, while Flynne is inside a VR game, invisible cars arrive in her world. A police personnel comes face to face with this phenomenon and is shocked to see such a thing happen in front of his eyes.

Invisible cars arrive in Flynne's world via a game by Milagros Coldiron in The Peripheral

As previously stated, Flynne, unknowingly, becomes entangled in a complicated relationship between the real world and the gaming world as she tries to navigate the latter.

As she delves deeper into the game created by Milagros Coldiron, she realizes that her real world is not too far away from what she sees in the game. Soon, elements from the gaming world will start making their way to the real world.

In one such scene from episode 2, a police officer encounters an invisible car that, until then, was only a part of the gaming world. The officer sees a flying coffee cup and approaches it, only to find that there is a car that only becomes noticeable when touched and started.

The Peripheral makes viewers question what is real and what isn't

The plot of The Peripheral starts to thicken when Burton asks her sister, Flynne Fisher, to be a part of his project while working for Milagros Coldiron. While working for the company, Burton is tasked with testing a new VR game. After he finds out that Flynne is good at the game, he requests that she play on his behalf.

During one of her first interactions in the game, Flynne notices that the world inside is very similar to the outside world. Although this aspect of the game slightly disturbs her, she continues playing mainly because she has to pay for her mother's medicines, which she will be able to do only if she reaches certain feats within the game.

As she progresses, Flynne gradually notices convergences between her experience in the VR world and the real world, leading her to suspect a glitch in the system. While she momentarily decides to stop all activities in the game world, she is chased by people from Milagros Coldiron who want her to complete the game in any manner possible.
