The series creator, David Macpherson, worked closely with director John Strickland to shape the narrative for season 2. During the Prime Video Autumn Showcase on October 15, 2024, Macpherson shared:

"The script continues to integrate human relationships with ecological themes, staying true to the essence of the series."

Filming for the first season took place at First Stage Studios, an 85,000 sq ft space in Leith, Edinburgh, which previously hosted productions such as Avengers: Infinity War.

With location filming limited due to Covid, the production team constructed a full-scale oil rig platform within the studio, complete with a helipad and a crane-installed helicopter, as explained by head carpenter Gavin Smith during an interview with BBC Scotland on January 11, 2023.

Smith elaborated:

"We worked with designer Rob Harris and used a range of materials, including steel and containers to replicate accommodation blocks. The scale of the project required us to source all the three-by-one timber available in Scotland at one point."

Caroline Doney, a member of the production team, highlighted the importance of creating visuals in the same interview with BBC:

"The biggest compliment is when viewers don’t realize it was all made in Leith. If it looks like a set, then I haven’t done my job."

Filming for The Rig season 2 was also conducted in Scotland, utilizing the locations and set designs that replicated the isolated environment of the Kinloch Bravo rig. Advanced visual effects were reportedly implemented to depict the rig’s hostile surroundings and environmental challenges.

In an interview with publication, What To Watch, on December 19, 2024, Iain Glen with other cast members shared insights about the production, saying:

"Nearly everything, whether we’re trying to film on an ocean bed or filming on a glacier, is very difficult to do in these actual places. Inside First Stage Studios in Edinburgh, they created this vast snow field that we were able to operate on and then threw all the elements at it. We felt very transported."

Glen highlighted the studio's controlled environment, which allowed the team to work efficiently despite the challenges of replicating extreme conditions.
