Fans of the show have been awaiting good news of a season three renewal, trailer, and release date after watching the last season. Although no news has been released by Prime Video, several stars as well as the showrunners have hinted at good news, including actress Morfydd Clark who stars as Galadriel on the show. “At some point, season 3 will be happening.”

Presently, the show has a commendable IMDb rating of 6.9/10 and an 84% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Season 3 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has not officially been confirmed

There has been no official confirmation from Prime Video about season 3 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. However as hinted by the production house before, the show had a five-season plan from its inception.

So when will season 3 come remains the question of the hour. Patrick McKay, one of the creators of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, hinted that fans will have to wait longer for a season 3 update. He told several media houses,

“We’re working very hard on it and are deep in the writing process and are really excited about where it’s going to go. But...we don’t have a date right now. After all, Mordor wasn’t built in a day!"

Other than McKay, French director Charlotte Brandstrom, who has directed 7 episodes of the show to date, commented on the fate and future of the show and told RadioTimes.com,

“I can’t say much about season 3, but I think there’ll be good news soon."

Forty million people watched the first two episodes of season 2 in just two weeks. Just one month after season two's debut, 55 million people watched The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which also made it into the top 5 shows on Prime Video.

Previously, hitting at the character development of Galadriel (a prime character on the show), showrunner John. D Payne revealed to ELLE.com that -

“Because of the nature of where the story has been so far, it’s been rather grim. Galadriel has had to be “like the Terminator or something. She’s just on a mission. But the character has a lot of other registers and tones that we are excited to play in—some of which you see in season 2, and some of which we’ve already started to think for season 3.”

Additionally, showrunner John D. Payne had suggested a third season to The Hollywood Reporter, saying, "We think the show is just hitting its stride, and we anticipate that season 3 will be onward and upward."

An update for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power's third season is anticipated soon, much to the delight of Middle Earth enthusiasts, given the show's impressive popularity thus far and predicted growth in the days ahead.

How did season 2 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power end?

Season 2 ends with Sauron ending up with the Nine Rings for men. Meanwhile, King Durin has been killed by the Balrog. Elsewhere in Rivendell, the Elves are planning to fight Sauron before he becomes too powerful.

The season finale also shows the death of Adar at the hands of his Orc army which is now under Sauron's allegiance. Even though Sauron now has the nine rings, he still does not have access to the three rings made for the Elves. This sets up the stage for a potential season 3, which might show the free people of Middle Earth facing off against Sauron.

The season 2 finale also showed the Stranger finally meeting the Dark Wizard. The latter offered the former immense power provided he used his magic for selfish purposes. The stranger however declined and a feud occurred between the two in which the stranger found his magical powers. He also got his staff and earned the name Grand Elf.

What to expect from The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 3?

We can expect a full-on battle between the free people of Middle Earth and Sauron. The dwarves, Elves, and Men might join hands to prevent Sauron from becoming the absolute master of Middle Earth in season 3.

It will be hard to defeat Sauron since the Orcs swore their allegiance to him and will be seen fighting on his side in the next installment. Since King Durin is no more, his son Prince Durin is now supposed to ascend the throne, however, many other dwarves are eyeing the throne. Thus season 3 might show a battle of succession among the dwarves.

The elves however still have the three rings that Celebrimbor had made for them. Hence they might use the rings to enhance their powers against Sauron in season 3. Since Elrond is a friend of Prince Durin, an alliance between the Elves and the Dwarves should not be difficult.

Further, the Stranger is gradually rising in prominence, and by the end of season 2, he has already earned his staff and the name Grand Elf. Season 3 might show him becoming the powerful Wizard Gandalf.

The season 2 finale foreshadows the arrival of Frodo Baggins. Just before Celebrimbor's death, he predicted that Sauron would be brought down by a single character. Tolkien fans know Sauron's fate from Celebrimbor's prophecy already, having seen and read The Lord of the Rings.
