The Rookie season 7 is back on ABC this January. The second episode of Alexi Hawley's police procedural drama aired on January 14, 2025, and followed the LAPD team amidst high-stakes drama, action, and a complex case.

The latest season followed the story of John Nolan, an ex-rookie and now a seasoned officer, as he mentored a new generation of rookies while navigating his personal and professional growth.

The Rookie season 7 also explored fresh dynamics within the LAPD. An interesting development occured in the second episode when Celina Juarrez, Nolan's Rookie passed the Plain Clothes Day evaluation. It is a day when training officers step back to observe their rookies in action. This progress took her closer to becoming a full-fledged cop, and fans are excited to see how this arc plays into the upcoming episodes.

The Rookie season 7 episode 2: Celina Juarez got a step closer to graduation

In The Rookie season 7, episode 2, titled The Watcher, Celina Juarez crossed a milestone in the last days of her rookie training. The episode featured her Plain Clothes Day, something that the fans had seen in the previous seasons of the show.

Initially, as her T.O., Nolan struggled to let Celina take charge and interrupted her while dealing with a house robbery. He soon realized his mistake when Celina called him out on his behavior. He backed off, and Celina was able to take up the case with confidence and her own judgment.

By the end of the episode, Celina's skills shone through and she passed the evaluation. This progress took her closer to becoming a full-fledged officer. There was another evaluation in episode 2 as Sergeant Grey tested Nolan's capability as a first-year training officer. Grey mentioned that Nolan did a decent job but there was still room for improvement.

With episode 2, The Rookie season 7 returned to its episodic format. In this episode, the team tackled a case of vigilante justice involving a copycat. A mysterious figure, nicknamed The Watcher, made his appearance in the very first scene and aided Celina and Nolan in taking down a criminal.

The team later found out that The Watcher was famous among civilians, and had a social media presence. However, he crossed a line when he shot a gang member in broad daylight despite the latter not actively involved in a crime at the time.

The investigation revealed that The Watcher was an ex-cop, but he was not the one who shot the gang member. The team uncovered a copycat vigilante targeting individuals linked to the murder of Sienna Sanchez, a teenage girl. The trail led to Sienna's grieving mother, Imelda, who was the copycat.

She was posing as The Watcher to get revenge for her daughter's death by targeting the gang members responsible. The gang members were also aware of this, and they had surrounded her house. The Rookie team eventually diffused the situation, persuading Imelda to surrender, saving her from the gang members and solving the case.

The episode delved into the marital lives of Nyla Harper and Angela Lopez, giving them more screen time than in season 6. Nyla and James disagreed about hosting community activists to address the corruption in the LAPD. Their opposing views on the matter and Nyla leaving the event led them to discuss their fast-paced marriage and conflicting careers.

On the other hand, Angela and Wesley's relationship faced subtle tension when Detective Graham’s flirtatious behavior with Angela sparked jealousy in Wesley. Episode 1 of season 7 disclosed how Detective Graham was attracted to Angela, and Wesley was aware of this when he watched Graham's therapy session.

The episode dived into the lives of the new rookies

In the latest episode of The Rookie season 7, the spotlight shifted to the personal lives of the new rookies, Miles Penn and Seth Ridley. Miles was a former football star who could not pursue his career in the NFL due to a knee injury. He was living in his car due to financial challenges, and his T.O., Tim Bradford pushed him to find a permanent place to live.

Meanwhile, Seth's nervousness was attributed to his history of cancer. The new rookie feared its return after irregular test results in this episode, and his vulnerability led him to share the truth with his T.O. Lucy Chen. The upcoming episodes are expected to dive deeper into the personal lives and professional development of the new characters.
