ABC's police procedural drama, The Rookie season 7 aired the third episode of the season, Out of Pocket, on January 21, 2025. Created by Alexi Hawley, the series follows the personal and professional life of LAPD's oldest Rookie turned training officer, John Nolan.

As per the show's format, the new rookies were assigned a training officer each, and this time, the officers were Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen. At the beginning of the season, the former lovers struck a bet on who could train their rookie better.

In episode 3, Sergeant Grey found out about the bet and as a punishment, ordered them to swap their rookies. Later in the episode, the duo tried to continue the bet but it was finally a tie, as both the rookies failed to follow the chain of command.

The Rookie season 7 episode 3: What challenges do Lucy and Tim face in their training bet?

In The Rookie season 7 episode 3, Lucy and Tim's struggles with their respective rookies continued, as both new rookies failed to follow proper protocols. The bet started as a friendly competition in episode 1 when Tim challenged Lucy on who could train the better rookie.

In episode 3, Lieutenant Grey found out about the bet, and as a punishment, forced them to switch rookies. Even after this, Lucy and Tim continued their bet, which reached an endpoint when the team faced a high-stakes situation.

During a hostage situation, Seth and Miles disregarded the chain of command and acted independently, putting the whole team in jeopardy. Although their actions resulted in a hostage being saved, their failure to follow protocol could not be easily ignored.

Lieutenant Grey warned them that such behavior put their career at risk, and the only reason they were not fired was because of financial constraints on training new recruits. Since both the rookies did not perform according to the mark, Lucy and Tim's bet ended in a draw in The Rookie season 7. Fans of the couple can expect more lighthearted chemistry from them in the upcoming episodes.

Towards the end of The Rookie season 6, convicted criminal and Bailey's ex-husband, Jason Wyler escaped from prison. The Rookie season 7 saw Nolan take extensive measures to protect himself and his wife, Bailey since Jason posed a threat to both of them.

John upgraded his home security system to the highest level and was constantly armed in case Jason ever attacked. His paranoia even led him to bribe Tim to break in, to check the strength of his security measures. When Tim was easily able to get into his house, Nolan's anxiety was further heightened.

Nolan was more concerned about Bailey's safety, and he started investigating Jason's possible whereabouts. He even went as far as to extract information from Daniel Goodwin, Jason's associate, who was in prison for murdering two teenage girls.

Detective Graham warned Nolan not to cross any legal boundaries for his personal agenda, and with Wesley's advice, Nolan then used an alternative approach. In exchange for protection for her younger son, he convinced Goodwin’s mother to help him. Nolan found out that a hitman, 'El Malvado,' had been hired by the Southern Front to eliminate Jason.

Nolan tracked down the hitman on his own, because he did not want Jason to die through murder. He wanted to take the route of law and send Jason back to prison. In pursuit of El Malvado, Nolan reached a dead cell phone zone and found Malvado torturing another man.

However, Celina noticed that Nolan was missing and his colleagues stepped in to save him. When the police came, El Malvado had already escaped, but Nolan was able to save the hostage. By the end, Nolan decided that he could not live in constant fear and scaled back the extreme security measures.

Jason's escape still remains prominent in the plot of The Rookie season 7, and fans are interested to see the conclusion of this long-running storyline.
