The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez, a true crime docuseries chronicling the abuse and murder of Gabriel Fernandez, a young boy from Palmdale, California, was released on Netflix on February 26, 2020. The six-part miniseries delved into the details of the horrifying criminal act that shook California in 2013, leading to the double arrest of Pearl Fernandez (Gabriel's mother) and Isauro Aguirre (Pearl's boyfriend) on May 23, 2013.
After the duo were arrested on account of Gabriel's murder, Pearl pleaded guilty and entered into a plea settlement, which overturned her death sentence into a life imprisonment one, without parole. On the other hand, Isauro pleaded not guilty to the charges, resulting in him receiving a death sentence for the first-degree murder of Gabriel Fernandez.
As of writing this article, Pearl is stationed at the Chowchilla State Women’s Prison where she will be spending the rest of her life. As for Isauro, according to California’s Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, he is currently held at San Quentin State Prison and awaiting execution at a future date.
The exact date of Isauro's execution could range somewhere between months to years given the legal scenario in California, which has led to a stalling of executions for people who have been given the death penalty.
Pearl Fernandez and Isauro Aguirre are the convicted killers of Gabriel Fernandez
Reports on the Gabriel Fernandez abuse and murder case imply that Pearl Fernandez, Gabriel's mother, had called 9-1-1 on May 22, 2013, to report that Gabriel was not breathing, as per ComingSoon.Net. As per the same source, when people first arrived at the location, they found Gabriel lying on the floor, unclothed with several visible wounds all over his body.
He was rushed to the hospital after he was discovered. However, he was declared brain-dead by the doctors upon arrival. After being on life support for two days, Gabriel finally passed away on May 24. According to autopsy reports, Gabriel had a broken skull, swollen brain, swollen neck, and several other injuries on his body.
When the authorities learned of the abuse inflicted upon Gabriel Fernandez by his mother and her boyfriend, they immediately took them into custody for abuse and attempted murder. However, upon learning of Gabriel's death two days later, they arrested the duo for Gabriel's first-degree murder and abuse, and several other instances of torture.
During the trial, while giving his testimony, Gabriel's brother recapitulated the horrifying details of the terror inflicted upon his brother while he was alive. This included instances of regular beatings from Isauro, who, according to Gabriel's brother, would often hit and kick him.
He also revealed that Gabriel was occasionally pepper-sprayed in the face and struck with a belt buckle and a metal hanger while he was naked. Additionally, he said that Fernandez was forced to eat expired food items and cat excrement. On several accounts, he was also made to eat his own vomit.
