The revival series The Twilight Zone, developed by Simon Kinberg, Marco Ramirez, and Jordan Peele, is based on Rod Serling's classic original series from 1959. The sci-fi anthology series premiered its first season on April 1, 2019, and aired its entire second season on June 25, 2020, on CBS All Access (now Paramount Plus).

The second episode from season 2, titled Downtime, centers around the virtual reality concept. Written by Jordan Peele and directed by JD Dillard, the episode explores the interplay between the real and virtual worlds. It features Michelle Weaver (Morena Baccarin) as a hotel clerk who discovers that her identity and world are nothing more than a simulation created by a man named Phineas.

Following Phineas' death, Michelle's existence hangs in the balance, and she is left to figure out a path forward on her own. By the episode's end, Michelle (who carries part of Phineas' consciousness) decides to continue living in the simulated world. She is joined by Phineas' wife, Ellen, who adds emotional depth to Michelle's virtual existence.

In the last few minutes of the episode, the downtime comes to an end and the red orb disappears. This causes all the avatars to come out of their trance and go back to business as usual. Similarly, Michelle goes back to the hotel and resumes work behind the desk. Just then, Ellen arrives to check in to the hotel for a few weeks' stay and is greeted with a warm smile by Michelle.

This seemingly ambiguous ending provides a hopeful end to Michelle's story. Ellen returns to the simulation after mourning her husband's death in the real world. For her, it is the only place left that still carries a part of her husband (inside Michelle). This way, the relationship between Ellen and Phineas can continue, albeit in a new form.

Additionally, Ellen and Phineas had two children, who will be able to access the virtual world once they come of age. This will allow their family to reconnect and carry on in the simulated world. Michelle also gets to experience a real connection with Ellen over a lonely existence filled with meaningless interactions in the virtual world.

Viewers are first introduced to the hotel clerk Michelle Weaver as she gets promoted to the role of hotel manager. As she steps outside, she discovers an eerie-looking world where people stare at a giant red orb in the sky in a dream-like trance. They refer to it as "downtime."

Michelle later learns that she is an avatar, like everyone else in this world. Her creator is a man named S. Phineas Lowell, who customized her whole life, including her career, for an authentic online experience. Phineas was synced up when he suffered a heart attack and slipped into a coma. His condition was being monitored, but it was hard to say how much of Phineas still existed inside Michelle.

Furthermore, Michelle links the simulation to a digital online game called SleepAway, the latest offering in identity tourism. The virtual reality game offers members an escape from the drudgery of their lives by connecting them to an alternate world where they can be anyone they want to be.

All they have to do is plug in the company's earbuds while going to sleep, which will sync the sleeper's brains with the computer and give them access to the virtual world in their dreams.

As Michelle discovers these things, the company sends tech support guys to help her log off, but she declines, fearing it might end her existence. In a last-ditch effort, the company sends Phineas' real wife, Ellen (Serinda Swan), inside the simulation to convince Michelle to unsync before the end of downtime. She explains to Michelle that it is the only way to save Phineas.

However, Michelle refuses again. She later learns that Phineas killed himself and thus, she has nothing to return to. Her only option is to exist as Michelle forever in the simulated world.
