The Umbrella Academy season 4 was released on Netflix on August 8, 2024, at 12 am Pacific Time. The series is based on the comic book series of the same name by Gerard Way. The final season followed the Hargreeves siblings as they dealt with the loss of their father and came together at their old home to deal with the fortunes and misfortunes that Reginald Hargreeves had left behind.

The Umbrella Academy season 4 has six episodes, each varying between 52 to 69 minutes completing the map drawn by the previous seasons. The problems of Hargreeves siblings won’t end anytime soon even when they have lost their superpowers. This time there is more tension as new enemies are waiting for the right moment and they won’t let go of such an opportunity.

Jennifer was among those 43 children born on October 1, 1989. There were hints about her name, face, and identity throughout the show in every season but details about her and the famous “the Jennifer incident” were shown in The Umbrella Academy season 4.

The Umbrella Academy season 4: Mystery behind “The Jennifer incident”

"The Jennifer Incident" is a big part of the novel written by Gerard Way as it defines the death of Ben in the story. The hints about Jennifer have been given throughout the series as explained by Steve Blackman.

“I wanted to pepper in through the seasons moments where the audience may or may not notice that they’re seeing references to Jennifer,” said Blackman in an interview with Tudum.

The viewers see Jennifer for the first time in the second episode of The Umbrella Academy season 4 when the Hargreeves siblings travel to New Grumpson, Maine. Jennifer’s father Sy Grossman who is actually Abigail, asked the siblings for help to find Jennifer.

As the siblings arrive there, Ben heads to the diner where he finds Jennifer as the manager. Ben recognizes her and takes her back to Diego’s minivan. As they all prepare to leave, conspiracy theorists Jean and Gene crash into them and abduct Jennifer.

In The Umbrella Academy season 4 episode 3, Jennifer’s past is revealed. Jennifer as a child was found inside a giant squid and when people asked her about how she landed there, she replied “The cleanse.” This is what drives Jean and Gene to kidnap Jennifer to know everything about the event. But before they could gain anything out of her, Ben found Jennifer and saved her.

Reginald explains that he created New Grumpson to save Jennifer from his own children so that they could not harm her. He erased the memory of all of them including Jennifer, so that they don’t remember how Ben died.

This mystery is referred to as the "Jennifer incident" which was hinted to lead to Ben’s death in season 3 but the complete truth is unveiled in The Umbrella Academy season 4 episode 4. The siblings were assigned a mission to find and destroy a weapon to prevent a dangerous arms deal from occurring.

When they found the box with the weapon they were told not to open it, but Ben disobeyed the instructions as he heard Jennifer in that box and to save her he set her free. When their hands touched, it resulted in a burst of energy as the marigold in Ben and the durango in Jennifer combined. Reginald in the end shoots both of them which results in Ben’s demise.

Fans of the show can watch The Umbrella Academy season 4 from August 8, 2024 on Netflix.
