The first teaser trailer for The Umbrella Academy Season 4 has been released by Netflix. The trailer provides a glimpse into the show's final chapter, which is set to premiere on August 8, 2024. Notably, this season picks up with the Hargreeves siblings in a new universe where they have lost their powers.
Set to the song "The Final Countdown," the trailer portrays the siblings dealing with this new timeline. Moreover, it highlights their chaotic interactions and the importance of their family bonds.
For the uninitiated, The Umbrella Academy on Netflix is a series that follows the story of a dysfunctional family of adopted superhero siblings. The show is also based on the comic book series by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá.
The Umbrella Academy Season 4 trailer teases intense developments in a riveting portrayal
Despite their initial powerlessness, the trailer shows Viktor Hargreeves emitting an orange glow from his hands and Ben Hargreeves using his tentacles. The trailer opens with a quote from Reginald Hargreeves, suggesting a connection to the series' beginning and hinting that the story might come full circle.
Reginald Hargreeves said:
"Our world is changing. Has changed. There are some among us gifted with abilities far beyond the ordinary. I have adopted six such children. I give you the inaugural class of the Umbrella Academy!"
Furthermore, the trailer also reflects the prospect of confronting Reginald, especially without their powers, which seems challenging considering the trauma he caused them. His role as the ultimate villain is fitting, given their history. Some siblings are shown regaining their powers, although the timing and manner are left unclear.
Before this, as evident in the trailer, the siblings might embark on a rescue mission. This rescue mission could possibly save Abigail from Reginald, as suggested by Allison Hargreeves.
The trailer successfully captures the dynamic energy of the Hargreeves family and teases crucial plot elements without revealing too much. Moreover, the intense developments coupled with family drama add a riveting tone to the trailer.
The Umbrella Academy Season 4 showrunner contemplates the big questions for characters
The Umbrella Academy Season 4's showrunner Steve Blackman shares his thoughts on the final season. In his interview with Entertainment Weekly, he highlighted the implications of characters losing their superpowers in addition to grappling with an underlying existential crisis.
“The first place I started with season 4 was: What happens if you were once a superhero and then suddenly you're not? What does that do to you? Not only as an individual, but what is the family dynamic when suddenly they find themselves normal?,” Blackman said.
Furthermore, Blackman, in his statement, highlighted the challenge this new reality presents to the family as their very connection stemmed from being a "dysfunctional family." He also contemplated the bigger question about how they stand together as a family with their connection point i.e. their "superpowers (being) stripped away."
Regarding Victor, he notes:
“Victor is probably the one sibling who is most comfortable in his skin in Season 4. He’s doing better than any of the other siblings in terms of adjusting to his new life. He's the most accepting of their new reality.”
Blackman also hints at the lingering impact of Season 3’s events. In his statement, he addressed that Hargreeves' incomplete work will have serious repercussions on their timeline.
The Umbrella Academy Season 4 will premiere on Netflix starting August 8, 2024.
