Primo, Fallout and eight other entertaining TV shows that deserve to be on your 2024 Prime watchlist
1) The Consultant (February, 2023)
In this eight-episode thriller, Christoph Waltz plays the lead protagonist. An adaptation of Bentley Little's novel, it follows the events that unfold after the CEO of a mobile gaming company is murdered and a mysterious consultant, Regus Patoff, arrives to take his place.
Waltz, who has a knack for playing intimidating characters onscreen, effortlessly captures Regus' volatile and unpredictable nature. Nat Wolff and Brittany O'Grady also deliver captivating performances as Craig and Elaine, who slowly become wary of Regus' true intentions.
The Consultant has an unsettling vibe that will particularly appeal to viewers who enjoy psychological thrillers. Although it is a slow burn, this show on Prime has enough unpredictable twists to keep the viewer invested till the very end.
2) Primo (May, 2023)
Prime has several heartwarming coming-of-age TV shows, and Primo is one of the best. Based on show creator, Shea Serrano's own experience, the story of this eight-episode comedy revolves around 16-year-old Rafa, portrayed by Ignacio Diaz-Silverio.
While he deliberates on what his future holds after school, Rafa seeks advice from his five overprotective uncles which inadvertently leads to more confusion than clarity. One of the best things about this show has to be the family dynamics. Despite the chaos that ensues on a regular basis, it's evident that Rafa has a family that is accepting and supportive.
All the characters in the show are likable and funny. Also, the relatable dialogue with generous helpings of sarcasm and witty jokes adds to the viewing experience.
3) The Horror of Dolores Roach (July, 2023)
Most people know Justina Machado from her work in Six Feet Under (2001) and One Day at a Time (2017). In this show by Prime, she dons the role of Dolores Roach, who had to serve an unjust prison sentence of 16 years. After she's released, Dolores hopes to start anew and sets up a massage parlor to earn a living. But, when she kills a client, things start to spiral.
The story is based on Empanada Loca, an off-Broadway play as well as a podcast created by Aaron Mark. The off-beat premise makes it clear that The Horror of Dolores Roach on Prime isn't a run-off-the-mill horror. The eight-episode show primarily boasts a dark and gory narrative but is complemented by moments of intelligent comedy that keep the momentum going.
4) Dance Life (January, 2024)
When professional dancers take to the stage, they make it look effortless. But years of hard work and perseverance go into perfecting the art. In this reality show on Prime, the audience gets a better idea about how dancers are trained and groomed.
Consisting of five episodes, Dance Life focuses on some of the best students from Australia's premier dance academy. They put everything on the line in the hopes of becoming professional dancers, but not everyone will make it to the end.
As Dance Life highlights real stories, it tends to make a strong impression on the audience. The way the talented young dancers passionately talk about their dreams, aspirations, struggles and concerns, it's difficult for the viewer not to feel invested in their journey.
5) Red Queen (February, 2024)
Adapted from Juan Gómez-Jurado's novel, Red Queen on Prime will appeal to fans of Sherlock (2010). The seven-episode Spanish thriller stars Vicky Luengo as Antonia Scott, who is extremely intelligent but likes to keep to herself. When the son of a wealthy family is murdered and an heiress is kidnapped, she pairs up with Jon Gutiérrez (Hovik Keuchkerian), a Basque police agent, to solve the case.
Like Sherlock Holmes, Scott is eccentric in her own way, but it's still fascinating to see her piece together the clues faster than anyone else in the room. The camaraderie between Scott and Gutiérrez that grows with each interaction is also enjoyable to watch. The pace does dip every now and then, but it still maintains the suspense till the last episode.
6) Mr. & Mrs. Smith (February, 2024)
Maya Erskine and Donald Glover had big shoes to fill when they signed on to play Jane and John Smith because audiences associate the characters with Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, thanks to the 2005 movie. And, they certainly didn't disappoint.
Even though this show on Prime is inspired by the same movie, the premise is a little different. Jane and John are secret agents for a mysterious organization but only pose as a married couple as a cover. In each of the eight episodes, they work a different mission while also trying to work out their developing feelings for one another.
The chemistry between the leads is one of the highlights of Mr. & Mrs. Smith. But that doesn't mean that it's only about the romance. This cinematically-shot show on Prime combines espionage with comedy, action and drama to keep things interesting.
7) A Gentleman in Moscow (March, 2024)
First airing on Paramount+, this Ewan McGregor starrer is also available for streaming on Prime Video. Based on a novel by Amor Towles, the story is set around the time of the October Revolution. Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov, an aristocrat who recently returned from Paris to Russia, is put under house arrest in a Moscow hotel.
Even though the situation is grim, Count Alexander learns to open up to the people he meets in the hotel, which teaches him valuable lessons about love, family, friendship and courage.
The striking sets and detailed costumes coupled with McGregor's emotional performance create a memorable narrative that connects to the audience. Fans of historical TV shows shouldn't miss out on this compelling drama that comprises eight episodes.
8) Fallout (April, 2024)
Based on a famous role-playing video game known the world over, Fallout is one of the most hyped shows on Prime right now. In the show, Los Angeles has turned into a wasteland after an apocalyptic nuclear war. Many citizens have to live in fallout bunkers referred to as vaults.
The wasteland is home to many dangerous mutants and bandits, and Lucy, a survivor played by Ella Purnell, has to confront them head-on when she goes looking for her missing father.
While the premise and characters will be familiar to video gamers, this Prime show will also appeal to viewers who don't know much about the game. From the well-developed characters to the stunning graphics, everything about this eight-episode show is geared to capture the attention of the viewers and keep them hooked.
9) My Lady Jane (June, 2024)
Like A Gentleman in Moscow, this recently released TV show on Prime is also historical in nature. From the name, viewers might assume that it chronicles the life of the actual Lady Jane Grey, but it's a fictional fantasy retelling. In this show, Lady Jane Grey, portrayed by Emily Bader, is being forced by her mother to marry Lord Guildford Dudley (Edward Bluemel).
Just when she thought her life couldn't get any more complicated, she's crowned queen, which puts a price on her head. It's always a treat to see empowered female protagonists in classic settings, and Bader is both charming and quick-witted as Lady Jane.
This isn't the kind of show that would help viewers pick up historical facts, but it would be perfect when in the mood for some light-hearted fun and adventure.
10) Every Family (July 2024)
Prime Video has no dearth of funny family-friendly sitcoms and this Brazilian TV show is one of the latest titles to join the collection. A 19-year-old boy, Pê played by Pedro Ottoni, has developed a taste for the finer things in life. However, he has to adjust to a whole new lifestyle when his family moves back to Rio de Janeiro to live in his grandmother's house.
