Unsolved Mysteries Volume 5 episode 1 delves into the case of the double murder of Carnell Sledge and Katherine Brown in the Cleveland Metroparks' Rocky River Reservation. The episode introduces viewers to a baffling crime that took place in broad daylight, with no witnesses or obvious motive.

The series is about unsolved crimes, including murders or strange happenings in the supernatural world. Volume 5 Episode 1 of this series, titled Park Bench Murders, deals with two dead bodies found by kayakers. The investigation didn't find any evidence of theft or suspects, which confused the police. Hence, the killer of Carnell Sledge and Katherine Brown wasn't found.

The official synopsis of the episode states,

"Two friends were shot dead at a busy park on a June day, but the killer escaped unseen. Grieving families are on a hunt for clues about the brazen crime."

Unsolved Mysteries volume 5 episode 1 starts with two kayakers, Tony and Kaitlin Vacha, who discovered the bodies of Carnell and Katherine on June 4, 2019. They discovered one body near the bench and another by the riverbank.

The police were informed, and the identities of the deceased were discovered by the police through the papers found in the two unattended cars in the parking lot. They first thought about a murder-s*icide, but they concluded it was a double homicide since no weapons were discovered close to the bodies.

“This double homicide is everyone’s worst nightmare. It happened in broad daylight in a very busy public park. Law enforcement has not been able to determine a motive for the murders and has no suspects. This case needs viewers’ help,” Dunn Meurer told Netflix.

The episode focuses on the events that happened before the murders. Katherine and Carnell had talked earlier that day, and they both got to the park around 5 pm. A roofer nearby said that he saw them, but no sound of gunshots was reported by him. The killings took place during the day in a busy public area, which led to a lot of questions but not-so-satisfactory answers.

Unsolved Mysteries volume 5 episode 1: Investigations and leads

Carnell Sledge and Katherine Brown's families were left heartbroken by their deaths. Despite the Police's efforts, no solid leads came up. Todd Krajek from the FBI joined the investigation, but the case stayed unsolved, even with more resources. Both victims were described as good-hearted individuals with no known enemies, which made the case more complicated.

Detective Don Sylvis, who was in charge of the investigation, was upset with the lack of witnesses or physical proof. Since the gun was small, it's possible that no one heard the gunshots, but this made the search for answers even harder.

In Unsolved Mysteries Volume 5 episode 1, it is made clear that the police don't have a clear motive or suspects.

Suspects and dead ends

As the investigation went on, the police ruled out the possibility of theft. Kate reportedly had a word with Carnell while she was at the gym, according to call logs. The conversation lasted about ten minutes. They went to the Rocky River Reservation to meet up after the call. Later, video from a police officer's dash cam showed both of their cars on their way to the place where they were killed.

Alyssa, Carnell's ex-girlfriend, was first thought to be a suspect, but she had a strong alibi and even gave up her gun to be tested, which showed no link to the crime. Katherine was in a violent relationship before she died, and her ex-boyfriend was thought to be the killer, but he had a strong alibi.

Since Carnell was African American and Katherine was white, the idea that the killings might have been motivated by racial hate was also considered, but no evidence pointed that way. Unsolved Mysteries Volume 5 episode 1 depicts the case well, taking numerous turns but no clear ending.

The families’ search for justice

Families of both victims have offered a $100,000 reward for any information that could help catch the killer. They’ve placed signs around Cleveland Metroparks to remind the public of the unsolved murders. The police, while sympathetic, have grown frustrated by the lack of progress. As the episode concludes, the families express their grief and determination to find closure.

Unsolved Mysteries Volume 5 episode 1 goes into details about the murders of Carnell Sledge and Katherine Brown. There are still no suspects in the case, even though the FBI and other law enforcement agencies have looked into it thoroughly.
