Episode 3 of Unsolved Mysteries Volume 5, explores the numerous cattle mutilations over decades in many farms and ranches across the US, that left ranch owners baffled and the law authorities clueless.
The new season of Unsolved Mysteries arrived on Netflix on October 2, 2024, with four episodes. The synopsis of episode 3, titled Mysterious Mutilations, reads as:
"For decades, a wave of cattle mutilations executed with near-surgical precision has plagued the US. Are extraterrestrials behind these gruesome acts?"
The case of mysterious cattle mutilations
Background
The episode discusses multiple instances of cattle mutilations that resulted in the horrible death of horses, cows, bulls, and other livestock across the USA. The show highlights cases like the murder of a heifer in 2021, to the death of a horse named Snippy from Colorado, whose spinal cord was gone.
Most of the livestock that was killed had missing organs, dismembered body parts, and flesh and tissue removed.
Investigation
As shown in Unsolved Mysteries, the majority of the animals were murdered using a traditional method of mutilation, and there was no blood at the crime locations. The investigators were perplexed as to why there was no blood although every animal that was killed had been disfigured.
Fourteen cows of a man named Eli Hronich from Raton were also found mutilated. In all the cases, there were no tracks or leads. Rancher Herschel, who was on the show recalled:
"I found absolutely no tracks. At all. The fact there was a lack of tracks and stuff just really made my hair stand up on end."
Resolution and aftermath
There are currently no leads available to identify the perpetrator. Some believe that the unexplained killings are connected to ritualistic animal sacrifices carried out by Satanic organizations. Some believe aliens experimented on the livestock, while others speculated that it was a government experiment.
Despite the unusual nature of the crimes and the frenzy they caused, the investigators were not able to find any leads related to these cattle killings.
Terry Dunn Meurer, one of the executive producers of the series told Tudum that the cattle killings were the "most mysterious mystery" they covered. She added:
“There are no suspects and no definitive theories about why cattle have been murdered and mutilated in multiple states, across decades. It’s crazy to say this, but UFOs almost seem like the most likely theory."
