A Redditor, JonBoy82, uploaded a post on the platform on July 7, 2024, claiming that Netflix had charged them twice after canceling and resubscribing the plan. The Reddit post highlighted the double billing by Netflix, which had people calling out the platform.
The Redditor shared a video of their billing history and added that despite canceling the plan once and resubscribing to it, they were still being charged twice. The video also showed that the double payment had been going on for over a year now.
Since they uploaded it, JonBoy82's post has gained multiple reactions from other users and while some said that it was the platform's fault, others had questions about the payment.
“You pay double the cost for over a year now without doing anything or charging back??? Yo call your bank bro, charge back half the payments with a reasoning and write Netflix about it,” a Redditor said.
They added:
“This is very close to robbery lmao.”
“I think they are stealing. Good point,” another user agreed with them.
Some of the users also have the opinion that it might be Redditor's fault. They said that JonBoy82 might have forgotten after subscribing to Netflix multiple times.
“What if you messed up and ended up having two accounts?” asked a user.
“Yeah, probably just never canceled and opened a new account because they forgot their old account info,” said another user.
A former Netflix employee explained that these are common incidents where people don't notice that they have multiple accounts running and are billed for them.
“I worked at a Netflix call center way back in 2010/2011 and this would happen a LOT. Guessing this is the culprit here,” the user said.
However, some users are blaming it on the payment platform and cards.
“I see those ads for rocket money all the time where people have a conversation about canceling bills they didn’t know they were being charged and I always think “how is that even possible??”… now I understand,” said a user.
“This is why I use gift cards only. I want full control,” said another user.
What did the Redditor post about Netflix double-billing?
A Redditor, JonBoy82, posted a screen recording of their phone showing the payment history for their Netflix subscription billing. The user said that they were being double-billed since July 2023 and that it was going on each month until July 2024.
“Why would you allow this to happen for months is my first question,” said a user on Reddit.
While posting the video on Reddit, JonBoy82, mentioned that they had unsubscribed from their account in February before resubscribing in March. They added that Rocket Money didn't unsubscribe for only a single membership.
“Cancelled my subscription in February and resubscribed in March. I guess I need to call directly. Rocket Money won’t unsubscribe only one account,” said the Redditor.
Information provided by Netflix for double billing
The streaming platform spoke up about the reasons behind the double billing briefly on their official website. It stated that there can be multiple reasons leading to the double billing of a user’s account. The site states that the two primary reasons could be that the user has "recently added a payment method" to their account. Or they had recently changed their plans.
The site also mentions that if there are other reasons leading to the double billing, users can contact their help center for further assistance.
In May 2024, the streaming platform faced another controversy for discontinuing their basic plans in the UK and Canada, which the users referred to as "daylight robbery."
