Max deduces that the killer suffers from se*ual psychosis. His suspicions are confirmed when the killer sends Max a letter admitting to being fascinated with the studies published in his book, The Psychopathy of the Criminal Mind.

In the end, Max and Oskar track down the killer to someone working at a funeral parlor. Although he confesses to killing Mathilde and Adele, he denies any involvement with Selma's death.

The detective duo finally uncover that Kristina killed Selma, her maid, as she was blackmailing her with n*de pictures taken when she was young. Kristina made the murder look like it was committed by the same killer to escape coming under suspicion.

Titled The God of Shadows, the season's second episode focuses on Captain Georg Steiner, a friend of the archivist Fraulein Lindner's father, admitted at the hospital for veterans. At Lindner's insistence, Max visits Steiner and finds him acting violently towards the hospital staff, who consider him as insane and keep him drugged and chained at all times.

Not long after their meeting, Steiner's dead body is found scalded and chained in the hospital's basement and his death is ruled a suicide.

As Max and Oskar dig into his past, they learn that Steiner and his accomplice, Franz Ebner, went to prison for killing a Chinese merchant almost a decade ago. They also find out about the diamond treasure they stole from the merchant and sent to Vienna via the boat Panther.

Haunted by his actions, Steiner comes to believe that he is cursed and will be punished by the vengeful Buddhist god. His paranoia leads him to commit suicide. Meanwhile, Ebner tracks down the location of the lost treasure, hidden in a lacquered cabinet in Vienna, while Max and Oskar are hot on his heels.

The Vienna Blood season 3 episode 3, titled Death Is Now A Welcome Guest, deals with the murder of a silent film star, Ida Rego, who starred in a leading role in the film, Dido, Queen of Carthage. While attending the film's premiere, Max and Oskar learn of Ida's death just as her character dies on screen.

Max first met Ida around two months ago when she arrived at his hospital to get treated for psychosomatic blindness. Professor Neumann, the head of neurology, went against Max's suggestion of using a talking cure to find the root cause of Ida's trauma. Instead, Neumann treated her with a placebo for a faster resolution and it helped in restoring her eyesight. In gratitude, Ida called Neumann, "the man who works miracles."

Back to the present scenario, the coroner informs Max and Oskar that Ida died from arsenic poisoning and their investigation reveals that she wined and dined with a secret lover, who poisoned her hours before her film premiere. They initially suspect the American senator Paul J Adler, and Stefan, a stalker of actress Arianne Amsel, who was replaced by Ida in the film.

However, the real culprit is revealed to be Professor Neumann. He had a secret affair with Ida in violation of his ethical code. Whe he tried to end their relationship, she threatened to expose their affair and ruin his life and career. Hence, he sought to kill her with the arsenic-laced wine. After confessing to the murder, Newmann ends his life before he can be arrested by the police.
