Netflix has officially renewed Virgin River season 7, even before the release of season 6 on December 19. This early renewal, announced on October 23, secures Virgin River's place as Netflix's longest-running English-language drama series, surpassing previous hits like The Crown and House of Cards.
Based on Robyn Carr's novels, the show follows nurse practitioner and midwife Melinda "Mel" Monroe, who moves to a small town in Northern California from Los Angeles. The show has Alexandra Breckenridge as Mel and Martin Henderson as Jack in the lead roles.
The renewal of Virgin River season 7 places the series within an exclusive club of Netflix originals—alongside Orange Is the New Black, Grace and Frankie, and Big Mouth, which have run for at least seven seasons.
The upcoming season 6 of Virgin River will have a full dose of wedding dramas, love triangles, and fresh twists, which will keep fans eager for more.
What to expect from Virgin River season 6?
In season 6 Jack and Mel will make the final preparations for their marriage. The season logline hints at plenty of drama, unearthing of secrets about Mel's father's past, and even an old-school trip back in time to the Virgin River of the 1970s.
A new teaser of the show gives a glimpse into how the story might unfold in the upcoming season. The logline of season 6 reads:
"Big moments and a promise of forever are on the horizon for Jack and Mel."
Virgin River season 7 marks the show's longevity and success
With the renewal of Virgin River season 7, the series has managed to achieve something rare for Netflix's original series—sustaining itself for seven seasons.
Shot in Canada with plenty of simple sets like a small bar, a clinic, and just a few houses, the series hasn't blown its budget on over-the-top special effects and stunts.
Its fiscal approach, paired with the devoted fan base, has kept it afloat. The show's seasoned cast also solidified its appeal amongst the viewers. Besides Breckenridge and Henderson, veteran actors such as Tim Matheson and Annette O'Toole bring depth to the series.
Virgin River joins Netflix's select seven-season club
With the renewal of Virgin River season 7, the series joins the select club of shows on Netflix that have worked for at least seven seasons. Only a handful of shows - like Orange Is the New Black and Grace and Frankie - have made it into this record book. The first season of Virgin River premiered on Netflix on December 6, 2019. Since then each year has seen a new season's release.
Even though the Spanish teen drama Elite holds the record for most seasons with eight seasons, Virgin River has more episodes. As per Deadline, Virgin River has a total of 74 episodes, while Elite has 64 episodes.
Virgin River season 6 drops on December 19, 2024 on Netflix. The exact release date for season 7 has not been revealed.
