On September 9, 2024, actor James McAvoy appeared on the American talk show, Live with Kelly and Mark, where he was quipped about his 2021 appearance in The Great British Baking Show.
When asked to confirm the news of his winning the show, McAvoy answered in the affirmative which led to an elaborate discussion between him and the show's hosts, Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos about his experience.
While doing so, James McAvoy spoke about his confectionery background which he thought might have given him an upper hand over the others in the competition. He also spoke of the dishes he made on the show including his standout dish, the Pina Colada snow leopard which earned him considerable praise from the judges.
James McAvoy won The Great British Baking Show in 2021
James McAvoy, best known for creating magic onscreen by taking on a wide array of roles that push his limits (for instance, the X-Men series and the Unbreakable series), is not too different offscreen.
In March 2021, McAvoy appeared alongside other popular personalities such as David Baddiel, Kelly Holmes and Anne Marie, and won The Great Stand Up to Cancer Bake Off, a part of The Great British Baking Show, intended to raise money for cancer patients.
James McAvoy had to go through three main challenges to be finally crowned as the winner. These included a Signature Challenge, a Technical Challenge, and a Showstopper Challenge.
In the Signature Challenge, all contestants had to prepare a decorative fruit tart. In the Technical Challenge, contestants had to prepare six Cheese and chive Scones and in the Showstopper Challenge, contestants had to prepare a Spirit animal marble cake.
During a conversation with Hello back on June 17, 2021, McAvoy revealed that although all of his dishes were good, what really earned him the title was his scene-stealer snow leopard cake which he revealed was inspired by his television series His Dark Materials.
He also joked that the cake earned him the win because Paul Hollywood, one of the judges in the show) was an ambassador for a cat shelter and McAvoy was able to pull at his "heartstrings a wee bit".
James McAvoy used to work as a part-time confectioner while pursuing acting
W Magazine spoke to James McAvoy sometime in December 2007 and published an article on the same on December 15, 2007. In the piece, it was revealed that McAvoy, besides taking up music and acting while he was 18, also took up baking alongside it. When asked to confirm the authenticity of the piece of information, McAvoy said:
"Yeah, a confectioner. I was like the apprentice confectioner. The other guy did all the hard stuff, and I would come in and put the cream and the little kiwi fruit on the top. It was great fun—cakes and tarts and gâteaux and all that.”
In the article, it was also mentioned that as soon as McAvoy's acting career started to take off, he quit his baking job to dedicate all his time to acting. Since that time, he has only engaged in baking activities offscreen for an extended duration in 2021, when he participated in The Great British Baking Show for a charitable purpose.
James McAvoy last featured in the psychological horror film Speak No Evil which released in theatres across the United States on September 13, 2024.
