The Boys season 4 finale, which premiered on July 18, 2024, featured a moment that saw Kimiko finally speak. The finale focused on the titular group trying to stop Homelander from reaching a position of power, however, they were not successful in being able to do so, and that saw all of them be taken into custody.
While Kimiki has been mute for the entirety of the show, The Boys season 4 finale was the first time she said anything. With her first words being "no" as she saw Frenchie be taken into custody by Cate and Sam, this moment might hint that she would finally be able to speak in the upcoming season 5.
So far, the show has tried giving reasons for why she hadn't been able to speak all along. In season 4, fans were given the explanation that Kimiko wasn't able to speak because it had something to do with her past with the Shining Light.
The Boys season 4 explained why Kimiko couldn't talk
The first explanation behind why Kimiko wasn't able to speak was revealed in The Boys season 2. After witnessing her mother being murdered by the Shining Light, Kimiko was inflicted with trauma that basically stopped her from talking again. This was, however, disproved in season 4.
In a conversation with Frenchie in season 4, Kimiko explained to him why she can't speak. Taking him back to her Shining Light days, she revealed that she was forced to fight against other children while growing up. However, the one condition of the fight made by Shining Light was that whoever cried first from the pain would be the one to die.
Given Kimiko was great at fighting, she won the fights, but seeing other children cry out in pain, only to be then killed, scarred her for life. This is what caused her to go mute.
How was she able to speak in The Boys season 4 finale?
The Boys has always explored Kimiko's wish of wanting to talk. It's an important aspect of the character, and season 4 even saw her go to therapy for it. The potential explanation is that her love for Frenchie caused her to talk again.
The season 4 finale saw Kimiko finally confess her feelings for Frenchie, with both of them sharing a kiss. While Kimiko and Frenchie have always been close with each other, seeing him get taken into custody while she was being held back elicited a response from her. This could also mean that we may get to see Kimiko be more verbal in season 5.
With Kimiko being able to speak, it could help reveal a lot more about the character and set up new opportunities for storytelling. It could also explore her trying to get over her past trauma as she is now motivated by her love for Frenchie and can speak again.
The Boys season 4 is streaming on Amazon Prime Video now.
