Star Wars fans received a major shock this week when they learned that The Acolyte won't be returning for a second season. The news was originally reported by Deadline on August 19, 2024, with the cancellation attributed to the show's inability to maintain its ratings, leading Lucasfilm to decide not to renew the series.
The Acolyte was the first major live-action Star Wars project that was set in the High Republic era. The series focused on the Jedi starting to get mysteriously murdered, and then Jedi Master Sol took over the investigation to uncover the truth. The mission then saw him being reunited with his older padawan, Osha, however, he also discovered something dark rising in the shadows.
While season 1 of the show set up the future in a huge way, fans expected to see season 2 of the series. However, the cancellation of the show has left many fans disappointed, who have started showing their frustration with the decision online. One fan on X commented:
"Ignore the people who don't want it WE WANT IT. Who's with me?
Other fans expressed similar sentiments on X.
"The fact that so many news outlets are saying how baffling Acolyte’s cancellation is, just proves how they f****d up. EVEN IF Acolyte had low numbers, it’s not reason enough to cancel it. Everyone knows that," another fan wrote.
"tbh i wouldn't be suprised if they willow-d it and also removed acolyte from disney+ for a tax write off," one fan commented.
Other fans are also worried about the show probably being deleted forever as a tax write-off by Disney. This would mean that the show could forever be taken off Disney+ and not be accessible to watch.
"Not only is The Acolyte Season 2 cancelled, but Season 1 could be deleted as a tax write off. You can't make this s**t up," a frustrated fan commented.
"Disney you better keep Acolyte’s name out of your tax forms," another fan said.
"This show was not bad it's sad to see people review boom it for no other reason than racism. I thought this show wasn't bad just not the most interesting to me personally but if disney removes it for a tax write off that will be disgusting," an X user asserted.
Lee Jung-jae and Manny Jacinto break silence over The Acolyte's cancellation
Following the cancellation of the show, Manny Jacinto took to Instagram to post a photo of him as Qimir standing alongside Osha at the end of the show. He simply captioned it with a red heart. However, following Jacinto's post, actor Lee Jung-jae, who played Master Sol on the show, reacted to the news as well.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly published on August 23, 2024, Jung-jae reacted by saying he was "surprised" by the show's cancellation.
"But personally speaking, I really loved Leslye’s writing. I thought that she was a great writer and director who was very talented in the storytelling, as well as creating characters and creating meaningful structures within the story. So I was actually personally really looking forward to watching a season 2 with her at the helm," Jung-jae said.
