House of the Dragon season 2 finale, aired on August 4, 2024, and took viewers across the war-torn Westeros in what could be the last time they see the mystic land in the next two years. However, the final episode did not really live up to its billing, with the show tasked with replicating the success of Game of Thrones.

However, this does not mean that the final episode was any less important in the bigger picture. The final episode served some very intriguing developments, including the season-long culmination of Daemon Targaryen's (Matt Smith) dreams. The tough phase at Harrenhaal ultimately led the Prince to a premonition that changed the way he looked at things.

This was one of the most important parts of the House of the Dragon season 2 finale. The episode also probed the rebellious Daemon to side with his wife and aid her in her quest for the throne. However, capturing this transition of Daemon and the impact of the premonition wasn't easy for the filmmaker.

Geeta Vasant Patel, who directed the finale, specifically spoke about this part to TV Line, saying they had two objectives.

"One was, we wanted to make sure that Daemon didn’t come across as a weak person all of a sudden, like someone we didn’t recognize," Patel said.

After careful consideration, they also decided to keep Daemon's premonitions at the center of the story, which led to the scene in the House of the Dragon season 2 finale.

Daemon realizes the "bigger picture" in House of the Dragon season 2 finale after the premonition

The past few episodes have seen Daemon struggling at the edge of sanity while trying to raise an army after a bitter fight with his wife, Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy). However, this episode finally revived his character, giving him a fresh sense of purpose and a new role in this whole picture.

After witnessing the future in his premonition, Daemon Targaryen seemingly becomes a different person and decides to be a part of the narrative and not the center of it.

"The vision Ryan had was, this thing that Daemon experiences in Harrenhal convinces him that there is something bigger than him. Daemon is someone who always thinks about himself, and here, he is being asked to think about the bigger picture...That vision convinces him that Rhaenyra is meant to be on that throne," Patel expanded.

This also seemingly hints that Daemon will become a different kind of character going forward in the story. He might perhaps withhold his more immature urges and explore his philosophical side in the war. During the interview, the director also praised Matt Smith's portrayal, which brought out the character perfectly.

Sadly, the House of the Dragon season 2 finale ended rather abruptly without exploring any of the big developments, including Daemon's vision and its significance. However, fans who have read Fire and Blood would be able to paint a better picture of this.

Sadly for the fans, they will have to wait for House of the Dragon season 3 to find out more about what will happen after this finale. It is surely worth waiting for.

House of the Dragon season 2 finale is now streaming on Max.
