The case of Menendez Brothers' Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story premiered on Netflix on September 19, 2024. Two brothers, Lyle and Erik Menendez, were convicted of murdering their parents, José and Kitty Menendez in 1989.

This is a show, co-directed by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan. It explores the case of two brothers who killed their parents in the United States in the 1990s. The Menendez brothers claimed to have killed their parents. They claimed that they killed them after suffering years of sexual abuse by their father, José, and mother, Kitty.

The two argued that the abuse made them feel that their lives were under serious threat. Since they thought their parents would kill them to keep the dark secrets within the family.

How did the Menendez brothers kill José and Kitty?

Lyle and Erik Menendez killed their parents, José and Kitty Menendez, on the evening of August 20, 1989. The brothers had planned the murders, having obtained shotguns several days before the attack. That night, they waited until their parents were relaxing in the living room of the family's home in Beverly Hills to carry out the crime.

Lyle and Erik first shot their father from where he was sitting on the couch. He was hit in the back of the head, and he died almost instantly. Then they turned their guns on their mother, Kitty, who tried to run but fell and was shot several times. Even when she fell to the floor, they continued shooting.

The brothers, who had just killed the victims, posed the scene to look like a mob hit, further sprinkling part of the ceiling to make it look even more incredibly chaotic. The brothers, who left the house, returned later, feigning discovering the crime and calling 911 to report the deaths.

Were the Menendez Brothers abused by their parents?

The Menendez Brothers have been very vocal about the severe physical, emotional, and s*xual abuse they suffered at the hands of their parents, especially their father, José Menendez. The brothers recounted that the early days of their childhood marked the starting point for such humiliation associated with performance on the tennis court.

His sons were pushed relentlessly by José, creating a very physical and emotionally abusive environment. More serious allegations include s*xual abuse. Brothers say the father started s*xually abusing them both when they were six years old.

Their massages turned into invasive s*xual conduct and these acts led to r*pe. Lyle further claimed when he was six years old and performed oral s*x on him which would lead to r*pe. He further claimed that he would insert objects like a toothbrush or some sort of shaving utensil brush.

Lyle said the abuse continued into his childhood, while Erik said the abuse continued into adulthood. Lyle also said their mom, Kitty, knew about the abuse and even committed s*xual acts with them. It was when in 1989 Lyle finally found out that Erik was still being abused by their father that the brothers' stories of abuse hit their crescendo.

This marked a culmination of a series of showdowns between the Menendez Brothers and their parents, which would lead to the tragic murder of both parents. Menendez Brothers, Lyle and Erik claimed that they killed their parents out of fear for their lives since they were convinced their parents were planning to kill them.

Their case was characterized by the siblings' claims of abuse, with the defense arguing that abuse justified the action of the two brothers. However, the prosecution has been questioning the claims in court, arguing their stories are made up to avoid serving consequences for their misdeeds.
