City of God: The Fight Rages On is a crime drama series set to release on Max on August 25, 2024. It is a sequel to the Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund-directed internationally acclaimed film City of God, which was released in 2002.
The original film is often given credit for reviving the Brazilian film industry, which was producing less than a dozen movies a year during that period. It was nominated for four Oscars and is often hailed as one of the greatest films of all time.
The series is set two decades after the film and features Alexandre Rodrigues as Busca-pé, now a journalist, returning to his place of origin to capture the crime that has been the only consistent thing in the favela.
Executive produced by Fernando Meirelles, the series stars Alexandre Rodrigues, Thiago Martins, Roberta Rodrigues, Sabrina Rosa, Marcos Palmeira, and Andréia Horta in prominent roles.
City of God: The Fight Rages On is the sequel series to the City of God film
City of God: The Fight Rages On is the sequel to the universally acclaimed crime film City of God. The original film is considered a cinematic masterpiece for its brilliant screenplay, revolutionary filming, and exceptional acting. Through its grittiness, the film displayed the perpetual violence and crime that are prevalent in the favela.
The peculiar aspect of the film was its portrayal of children and teenagers as the primary actors in the gang wars, drug trade, and violence. The film ends with a brutal sequence where a group of children, called 'the runts,' stabs the villain, Li'l Zé, to death. The act showed that the violence is itself a character in the favela, and even if the gangsters die, the violence would remain and new gangs would be formed.
In an interview with The Total Film, published on June 1, 2004, filmmaker Robert Altman praised the film, stating:
"I don't know how Fernando Meirelles made City Of God. It's so courageous, so truthful. I think it's the best picture I've ever seen."
The series is set two decades after the events of the film, and as shown in the film, violence, and killing are still prevalent in the favela. The rookie photographer and narrator of the film Busca-pé is back as a journalist, to cover the drug trade, corruption, and gang wars.
