Since its premiere in 2020, Netflix’s Unsolved Mysteries has given its fans plenty of memorable episodes, dealing with some of the most harrowing true stories from around the world. The series has thus far released five different volumes, with the latest, volume 5, having premiered recently on October 2, 2024.

With four episodes dealing with a wide variety of true mysteries, volume 5 was quickly lapped up by fans. The series has the following synopsis, according to IMDb:

“Immersive, character-driven stories are rooted in the experiences of ordinary people who have lived the unthinkable. Families, detectives and journalists hope viewers hold the clues to solving these mysteries.”

However, the four episodes have resulted in plenty of backlash from fans, with quite a few claiming that the Netflix series may have strayed away from its roots.

One Reddit post, in particular, questioned the kind of mysteries chosen with respect to the four episodes. A number of the series’ fans followed suit and shared similar sentiments, with quite a few criticizing the alien and ghost-related episodes featured in volume 5.

The four episodes that were recently released featured a range of different mysteries. Unsolved Mysteries episode 1, Park Bench Murders, dealt with an actual murderer who shot unsuspecting victims at the Rocky River Reservation Park. The Cleveland, Ohio incident took place in June 2019 and involved a real killer who had not been caught yet.

However, episode 2, My Paranormal Partner, took fans to a ghostly realm. A paranormal researcher, Don Philips, claims to be able to communicate with a spirit guide. While the alleged ‘spirit’ helps him solve various existing cases, the nature of the two's relationship led many fans to question the episode. A few claimed that Philips was mentally ill, and the episode only made things worse.

“What on earth was that ghost episode (V5e2),” said a Reddit user.
“Yea pretty sure that guys mentally ill and there making it worse,” commented another.

Furthermore, Unsolved Mysteries episode 4 dealt with the infamous 1947 Roswell incident, where people had claimed to have spotted a UFO. The episode alleged that many details were covered up by the government, but viewers were seemingly left unimpressed. One fan questioned the direction in which the show was going, claiming that the series should stray away from stories related to aliens:

“It always did have ufo stories, not tons of them but they were always there in the old seasons. There’s so many murders all the time they could cover any of them. So I hope they don’t just turn it into a haunted/ crypted show however I don’t think they should just get rid of the ufo or crypted/ haunted ones just cos,” opined a fan.

Another fan claimed the following:

“I can’t believe that they’re showing the original Roswell UM episode in the new Roswell UM episode. This the Mothman all over again. I’m sorry but so many of these cases don’t justify an entire episode. 9 episodes and 2 of them are replays of the Stack episodes.”

Finally, viewers also commented about Unsolved Mysteries episode 3, which focussed on mysterious cattle mutilations. Regardless, fans seemed to have issues with the overall direction that volume 5 took, with a few stating that they're just glad the series is at least not covering ‘buried-treasure’ cases:

“The tension between paranormal vs. grounded real-world stories, and the frustration viewers who prefer one have with the other, goes back to 1987. I’m just glad they’re not doing buried-treasure episodes,” one stated.

Needless to say, fans seemed to be of the opinion that Unsolved Mysteries volume 5 may have strayed away from its premise to some extent. While the series is famous for covering actual mysteries that have perplexed people worldwide, some of the cases in the latest volume did not impress fans.
