Outer Banks season 5 is officially confirmed, but along with Netflix green-lighting another season of the treasure-hunting drama, the streamer also announced that it will be the final chapter for the Pouges and Kooks. This news came ahead of the release of season 4 part 2, on Thursday, November 7, 2024.
Series creators Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke made a "Dispatch to all Pogues" statement via Instagram, saying:
"With a little sadness, but also excitement, we're putting season four behind us, and are turning to season five, in which we hope to bring our beloved Pogues home in a way we imagined and planned years ago."
Speaking of season 4, the finale effectively sets up the storyline for the fifth season of the Chase Stokes and Madelyn Cline-led drama. Nothing will be the same for the Pogues after JJ, the most loyal Pogue in Outer Banks, dies. Outer Banks season 5 is anticipated to feature the fallout from JJ's death and how it will change the rest of the Pogues. Another treasure hunt could also be in the midst as the friend group moves on with their lives.
Outer Banks season 5: What to expect?
Given the shocking events in the season 4 finale, Outer Banks season 5 has a lot to answer for. For one, treasure hunting will continue for the Pogues. Burke teased that another adventure awaits the Pogues in the fifth and final season. She told Netflix Tudum on November 5 that the main treasure hunt in season 4, where the friends looked for the Blue Crown, "should carry us through all the way to the end."
Besides treasure hunting, Outer Banks season 5 is highly anticipated to showcase the aftermath of JJ's death. After his biological father, Chandler Groff (played by J, Anthony Crane), brutally stabbed him in Morocco, the Pogues vowed to avenge his death.
The final scenes of the season 4 finale showed the crew going through different stages of grief after JJ's death. When Rafe asked everyone what they should do next, the question stopped their thoughts because it was JJ, the beloved Pogue, who always took action. They contemplated what JJ would do in that situation, and John B said: "He'd get even." Kiara, who was holding JJ when he died, was visibly angry as she declared: "Revenge."
Based on their conversation, Outer Banks season 5 is expected to see the remaining Pogues take necessary steps to ensure that JJ didn't die for nothing.
Moreover, season 4 part 2 featured some developing stories likely to make it into the fifth season. For instance, John B and Sarah discovered that they were going to have a baby. Fans will likely see the couple grapple with becoming new parents in the series finale.
When will Outer Banks season 5 release?
With Outer Banks season 4 part 2 only released recently, Netflix is yet to announce the release date for Outer Banks season 5. Moreover, the first four seasons of the series have not followed a consistent release schedule, making it tricky to guess when the fifth season will come.
The YA drama's debut season was released all at once in April 2020, and season 2 followed the summer of the following year, in July 2021. The third season skipped 1.5 years before releasing and also flipped the season again, opting for the end of winter, as it dropped on Netflix in February 2023.
Meanwhile, the recently released season 4 opted for a fall release, with Outer Banks season 4 part 1 coming out in October and part 2 in November. Hence, season 5's release date could be anyone's guess.
