Per the official logline, the series follows Detective Lois Tryon and Sister Megan "investigate a series of heinous crimes that seem personal while grappling with personal issues and uncovering a sinister web that raises more questions than answers." Grotesquerie promises gore and creepiness with a mysterious and terrifying story.

Ryan Murphy's Grotesquerie: What's the story?
The latest FX horror series is about a serial killer hunting people in a small town. However, the murders are not simple crimes as they are laden with religious depictions. And while it's a serial killer show, the murderer is not the main character in the story—it's the detective and nun duo trying to uncover the web of serial killings in their town.
Detective Lois Tryon and Sister Megan, who is a nun slash true-crime fanatic journalist, make an unlikely duo in the horror series. They string together clues from the murders in their quest to uncover the mysteries of the killings and find the serial murderer.
As the detective and the nun work their way out of the sinister web the killer, Mr. Grotesquerie, has created, they also juggle a difficult life and background. Detective Lois has a troubled family life and, while a capable detective, she's also an alcoholic. Meanwhile, the excitable Sister Megan has some secrets of her own, like her obsession with Father Charlie, as she revealed to the Detective in Grotesquerie Episode 4.
Ryan Murphy described the series as "not cynical" during a press conference, as quoted by Variety in an article published on September 25. He said:
"Most horror pieces can get very violent and sort of cynical. And I feel like this definitely has raciness and some action, but it's not cynical. It's about the search for hope and life in a dark place."
Who stars in Grotesquerie?
Niecy Nash-Betts shines in Ryan Murphy's FX horror show as Lois Tryon, the lead detective who is following what is by far the most disturbing case of her career. While battling her own inner demons and what's left of her family, she also works to uncover the motives of a gruesome killer on a grotesque murder spree.
Joining Nash-Betts in the detective and nun duo who are on the hunt for the killer, Mr. Grotesquerie, is Micaela Diamond. She is the street-savvy nun Sister Megan Duval who moonlights as a journalist with an ambition to uncover the dark truths of the world.
