Netflix’s expansive portfolio of true crime documentaries has also seen the release of Worst Ex Ever. The series, which premiered recently with its four-episode first season on August 14, 2024, delves into some of the most harrowing romantic relationships and the crimes that followed.
Each of the episodes feature separate stories of various true relationships and crimes, and includes the following official synopsis:
“Shocking tales of betrayal, violence, and deceit through testimonials, bodycam footage, and reenactments. Exposes the disturbing realities of monstrous past relationships, tapping into the universal fear of not truly knowing one's partner.”
Episode 1 of the series delved into the case of Benjamin Foster, an Oregon resident who was accused of being abusive towards multiple former partners. After holding Justine Siemens hostage for several days, Foster died due to a self-inflicted gun wound following a lengthy standoff with authorities, at a hospital in Oregon.
Benjamin Foster’s long history of abuse
Much like Worst Roommate Ever, Worst Ex Ever delves into a range of harrowing real incidents. However, Oregon resident Benjamin Foster’s crimes were not merely the result of a relationship gone wrong. Foster had a history of abusive behavior towards his partners and had engaged in similar behavior for almost a decade.
The first episode, which dealt with his case, also included a range of interviews from his past partners, painting a concerning picture of his actions. Benjamin Foster regularly engaged in patterns of control and abuse. For example, Amber, one of his ex-girlfriend's, revealed how she realized the extent of his issues only after moving in with him, when he struck her after a domestic argument.
He was initially reported, underwent domestic violence counseling, and the relationship eventually came to an end. However, it was his relationship with Jaimee Siemens that led to an even more concerning situation. Similar to Amber’s case, Jaimee initially did not have any issues but eventually realized that her partner was too possessive and controlling.
The situation escalated to the point where Jaimee was held captive by Benjamin for 16 days, which led her to resort to desperate measures. She was able to convince her partner that she needed to go grocery shopping, and once they reached the store, she jumped out of the car and escaped.
However, this was after enduring a range of torture inflicted by Benjamin. The initial fight broke out because Benjamin did not like the fact that Jaimee had informed his employer about his abusive history. During her ordeal, Jaimee suffered multiple life-threatening injuries, including a brain injury.
It was only in February 2023 that Benjamin was finally caught. He engaged in an hours-long standoff with the police at his residence in Grants Pass, Oregon. After being surrounded, he eventually shot himself and died on the spot.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department declined to comment on the matter but revealed that tear gas had been used during the standoff.
It was also revealed that Foster had a pattern of contacting unsuspecting individuals on dating apps, which he used to find new victims. He was known to have changed his appearance during this period to avoid detection and had a long history of abuse, which is explored in detail in episode 1 of Worst Ex Ever.
The series is currently available to watch online on Netflix.
