As shown previously in The Real CSI: Miami, 30-year-old Carlos Ortiz and 26-year-old Tara Rosado were found dead at their Key Largo residence on October 15, 2015. Lead detective Vince Weiner was the one in charge of this case. A neighbor of Tara Rosado's called 911 and informed authorities about the homicide.

When the detectives arrived around 3 pm, they found one male and one female individual deceased inside the home. Both were shot in the head. There were two 45 caliber ammo casings recovered from the scene and an illustration of the killing, which was assumed to be drawn by the children. There were no signs of forced entry into the house. However, there was clothing on the floor and the dresser was in disarray. The rest of the house was in perfect condition.

As shown previously in The Real CSI: Miami, there was no murder weapon retrieved from the scene, which forced the detectives to assume that there was a third person in the room. An ASUS Zenfone was also recovered from the scene. Apart from that, an Apple charger was found plugged in, although no Apple device was inside Tara Rosado's house which struck a chord in the detectives.

The neighbor who reported the homicide stated that he had CCTV outside the house, which would have recorded something to aid the investigation. However, the footage was found deleted. The DVD was given to the FBI, to recover the deleted data.

Suspects of the case

As shown previously in The Real CSI: Miami, Juan Rosado, Tara Rosado’s former husband was a prime suspect in the case. He had a restraining order because of his domestic violence records. Therefore he couldn’t come near the house or his kids. He showed up at the crime scene once the investigations began.

The detectives initially suspected that Juan had gone inside the house to talk to Tara Rosado and then got into an argument with Carlos, after which he shot both of them dead and later left the scene with the murder weapon. However, with an alibi and video evidence, Juan Rosado was later cleared.

The next suspect was Alan Murgas, who had an altercation with Carlos days before the homicide. Carlos thought Alan and Tara Rosado were having an affair after which he fought with Alan. Alan also tried to run him down with a car, which CCTV evidence showed. However, Alan was also cleared as a suspect with no evidence found against him.

New evidence was discovered

As shown previously in The Real CSI: Miami, a few months after the homicide, a snorkeler at Key Lago found a firearm at the bottom of the canal. This was the same gun that was used to shoot the couple - a Colt 45 1911 model. Soon, a dive team was assigned to recover more evidence, and an iPhone was also found in the Ocean Bay drive. The iPhone was later identified to be Carlos’s phone.

Meanwhile, the ASUS Zenfone found at the crime scene previously was unlocked and it aided investigations. As per the chat records on the ASUS phone, an individual named Jeremy Macauley and Carlos texted about some kind of business transaction. A video also showed Carlos flashing a lot of cash to Jeremy. The chats also showed Jeremy Macauley threatening Carlos. Another video that was found from the phone, showed Jeremy flashing some cocaine to Carlos.

The digital forensics from the phone aided investigations and a person of interest named Steele Hancock revealed that Jeremy Macauley found a floating bale that had 12 or more kilos of cocaine, approximately costing half a million dollars.

As per leads, Carlos who wanted to establish his tattoo shop was promised by Jeremy Macauley that if he helped Carlos sell the drug, he would fund his tattoo shop. However, instead of selling the cocaine, Carlos started using it.

Meanwhile, the neighbor's surveillance footage was also retrieved, which showed a dark SUV arriving at the victim's residence around 10:30 pm a day before the discovery of the bodies. A black male, later identified as Jeremy was seen coming out of the SUV, talking to Carlos, then entering his home and leaving after 4 minutes in the same car.

The SUV was identified to be a 2013 Toyota Rav 4. As per records, the car belonged to Suhai Montenegro, who upon interrogation revealed that she had loaned the car to Adrian Demblans, who drove Jeremy to Carlos's residence, as revealed in The Real CSI: Miami.

Soon, another piece of evidence surfaced, which was the final nail in the coffin for Jeremy Macauley. One witness showed the investigator's chats of Jeremy selling the same gun used to commit the double homicide to the witness before the homicide.

On December 19, 2017, Jeremy Macauley was sentenced to 2 consecutive life sentences and an additional 30 years for armed robbery. Adrian Demblans on the other hand pleaded guilty and was sent to 10 years in prison.

As revealed in The Real CSI: Miami, the final theory was that Jeremy shot Carlos Ortiz and Tara Rosado after he did not get the money he was promised for the cocaine that he retrieved. Therefore in rage, he shot them both, left the scene in that black car, and later dumped the murder weapon and the phone in the canal.
