The upcoming episode of Dateline on NBC is slated to cover three murders, including Carol Marlin and Margaret Ginn, the latter of whom was an unintended victim who happened to be there at the wrong time. Carol Marlin was the real target, whom her husband, John Peek, killed for her insurance money. He pulled this feat off again a few years later when he murdered Kasi Peek.
Dateline's upcoming episode, titled Deadly Omissions, which is set to air at 9 p.m. EST on NBC, will cover the murders in detail and will also explore how John Peek was caught. The synopsis for the episode reads:
"A woman's murder shines a light on an unsolved mystery from years earlier. As the connection between the two cases becomes clear, a long-hidden truth surfaces."
Ahead of the episode, let's explore what happened to John Peek's first targets, Carol Marlin and Margaret Ginn.
Who were Carol Marlin and Margaret Ginn, and what happened to them?
Carol Marlin was a resident of Marietta, Georgia, where she worked at the bustling Lockheed Martin. Her common-law husband, John Peek, also worked at Lockheed Martin in the IT sector. She was 46 and seemingly living a normal life till one outing with her coworker, Margaret Ginn, turned deadly for both of them.
Margaret Ginn was much older than Carol. She was born on April 4, 1932, in Georgia, and grew up in a loving household. She was married to Thomas Eugene Ginn before she was widowed in 1985. She also had a son named Russell Sterling Ginn.
Carol and Margaret had a plan to go out for dinner on June 13, 1996. However, it was Carol Marlin's husband, John Peek, who reported her missing that night. As the authorities delved into the search, it wasn't long before the two were located at Margaret Ginn's house, dead.
Both the women were bludgeoned fatally in the head. Carol Marlin reportedly looked much worse, and authorities alleged that there was someone with personal hatred against Carol Marlin, in particular.
The police soon started investigating and singled out John Peek, who allegedly claimed that nothing was really wrong in their marriage. However, there were some clues that linked this murder to John Peek. One of the defining ones was that two weeks before the murder, John Peek changed his wife's insurance beneficiary to himself.
Moreover, a colleague of Marlin's Barry Webb, called 911 to report an intruder. It was alleged that John Peek was the intruder. Moreover, there were no physical evidence linking John Peek to the crime. Hence, the case went cold, and Peek was not arrested.
Was John Peek arrested?
Peek was eventually arrested after he committed another murder. In October 2005, Peek murdered his 44-year-old wife Kasi Peek. While Peek didn't confess to this crime either, when the authorities discovered that Peek was once again aiming to get Kasi's life insurance, he was arrested.
When he was arrested and charged, he pleaded guilty to all three murders. He received three concurrent life sentences. He continues to serve his sentence at the Wilcox State Prison in Abbeville, Georgia.
Dateline on NBC will cover this case in more detail.
