Actor Jesse Spencer's much-loved character on Chicago Fire, Matt Casey, has got a finished storyline after three years. Spencer left the procedural drama in season 10, episode 5 due to personal commitments. His character Casey was shown to have moved to Oregon to become the legal guardian of Andy Darden's sons.

Casey returned for a guest appearance in the season 10 finale for Kelly Severide and Stella Kidd's wedding and again in season 11 episode 18. In season 12, episode 6, he married Sylvie and adopted Sylvie's adopted daughter, Julia Brett-Casey. They moved together to Oregon to live with Casey and the family.

What happened to Casey in Chicago Fire? The series finally completes Matt Casey's storyline

Jesse Spencer left the franchise in 2021 with the episode, Two Hundred, when his character decided to move to Portland, Oregon, and become the legal guardian of his late friends' two sons. Spencer's departure was motivated by the actor's desire to spend more time with his family after being a part of the franchise for a decade.

While the show wrote out the character convincingly, it never felt like his story in Chicago Fire was over. The series kept the door open for his comeback by maintaining his relationship with Brett in the series throughout, even after his departure.

Even when the couple broke up owing to the challenges of a long-distance relationship, it always seemed like there was a way for them to get back together. In season 12, episode 6, the series finally chose to complete Casey's storyline and give him a definitive ending with his marriage to Brett.

After getting married, Brett moved to Portland, Oregon with Casey. While the characters will always be a part of Firehouse 51, it's unlikely that Matt Casey will return again, as there are no more lingering plotlines that would require his involvement in the foreseeable future.

Given that Jesse Spencer himself has been looking to leave the franchise for a long time, it seems unlikely that his character would make a comeback soon.

The Chicago Fire writers can of course come up with new narratives that would demand their presence if both actors express their willingness to return. However, as of now, there's not much chance of them showing up again on the show.

Matt Casey and Sylvie Brett's relationship is arguably one of the best romances on the show. The couple had an awkward starting, given that Casey was once married to Gabby Dawson, a former member of Firehouse 51 and Brett's ex-best friend. Brett was even present during Matt and Gabby's less formal courthouse wedding.

Considering their complicated history, not everyone is a big fan of Brett and Casey's romance, but Chicago Fire set it up in the best way possible. The pair finally got their much-awaited happy ending in season 12, which also marks the ending of a long lingering storyline for Spencer's character.
