Saturday Night Live's Colin Jost was sent home from the 2024 Olympics following several injuries. As per a Deadline report on Monday, August 5, Jost, who was working as NBC's surfing correspondent in Tahiti for the Olympics, was sent home after a series of injuries. Australian Channel Nine weatherman Luke Bradnam, who was already in Tahiti, replaced Jost.
Immediately after arriving in Tahiti on July 26, Jost cut his feet in the coral reef and later got a staph infection on his foot. Adding to his injury, the Weekend Update co-host also had an ear infection.
"If I stand still, ants begin crawling inside the wounds" - Colin Jost on his Tahiti injuries
In June, NBC announced that SNL's Colin Jost would be their Paris Olympics surfing correspondent. However, Jost's tenure as a surfing correspondent came to an end after being marred with a plethora of injuries. Immediately after arriving in Tahiti on July 26, Jost announced on Instagram that his foot was injured in the coral reef during a surfing session.
In his July 26 Instagram post, Colin Jost showcased his foot with blood all over the toes. He captioned his post:
"This might ruin my WikiFeet score but I just arrived in Tahiti for the surfing Olympics and the reef was excited to greet me."
Three days later, on July 29, Jost released another Instagram post showing three of his five toes in bandages, making it his second injury since touching down on the French Polynesian island, which co-hosted the water games. In the caption to the post, Colin Jost joked about being in the medical tent more than any of the athletes.
According to an August 7 report from The Sacramento Bee, during an NBC broadcast in July, Jost explained his injuries to NBC Sports broadcaster Maria Taylor. He said:
"Before you came to me, I had gotten some open wounds on my foot from hitting the coral reef,"
He added:
"I actually have been walking in place in this yard because if I stand still, ants begin crawling inside the wounds. Not something I anticipated."
Jost's injured foot later developed a staph infection, and the comedian told Taylor that the medical staff asked him to see them every day. When the comedian light-heartedly joked about the situation, the staff assured him it was serious as his infection had not improved. He also joked about feeling like a "war correspondent" due to the amount of time he spent at the medical tent.
Adding to Colin Jost's woes, in another broadcast on Tuesday, July 30, he told NBC Olympics grandmaster Mike Tirico that he woke up with an ear infection. He revealed that he is on three different medications ("four if you count Pina Coladas") and joked that his goal was to get as many infections as there are Olympic events.
Jost jokingly hoped that at that point, he could get "high enough" on medicine and get to compete in Olympic breakdancing. Jost was seated in the pool, with his head and foot elevated from the water and torso submerged. The comedian explained that he couldn't get his head wet due to the ear infection and couldn't get his foot wet either due to the infection on his foot.
When rumors about his woes spread through social media, Colin Jost posted a health update on Instagram, where he explained:
"Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated. Semis and finals of Olympic surfing happening right now in Tahiti. At the Wall of Skulls."
As mentioned, a Deadline report on August 5 stated that Jost was sent home following his ailments and was replaced by Australian weatherman Luke Bradnam. The Aussie told Reuters that he initially had no idea who Colin Jost was. According to him, Jost "looked different" from the rest of the reporters. While everyone else looked weathered, Jost looked "perfect."
Bradnam had to ask one of the officials who he was before getting to know that Jost was from SNL and married to The Avengers star Scarlett Johansson. As per Reuters, NBC told Bradnam he would be used for their South American affiliate TV Telemundo.
In other news, the 2024 Paris Olympics will take place till August 11, 2024. The US is currently leading with 103 medals in total, with China in second place with 72.
