Ahead of the episode, let us dive into the circumstances surrounding this brutal murder.
Who was Dion Smith and what happened to him?
Born in the early 1990s in a loving household, Dion Smith had a good upbringing and he grew up to be a good man. He was a good son and a good brother to T. J. Smith, who also grew up to become a Baltimore County spokesperson.
He started working in the Kids Safe Zone when he was young and continued to do so in his free time well into his adulthood. He also worked two jobs to support his family and fathered two children. He was reportedly so popular amongst children that when he tried to resign from Kids Safe Zone, the children petitioned against it.
He was dedicated to being a good father and family man and worked hard to provide for the same. Smith had dreams of raising his children well and giving them a prosperous environment.
But this dream shattered on July 2, 2017, when Smith was found shot to death at his house on the 1400 block of Argyle Avenue in the Upton neighborhood of West Baltimore, Maryland.
He was shot to death with a shotgun.
Who killed Dion Smith?
As the authorities began investigating the case, they found the most common piece of evidence against the perpetrator- CCTV footage. With the help of the footage, the authorities singled out Terrell Gibson, a man with a history of crimes.
Moreover, witnesses also stepped up in the case to affirm that they had seen Terell Gibson go in and out of the house. This was enough reason for the authorities to procure an arrest warrant and take Gibson in.
Dion Smith's murderer was immediately charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, assault, and reckless endangerment. However, the authorities could not find the murder weapon or locate a motive in this case.
They alleged that Dion and Terell were in the middle of a dispute inside the property, which ended with the latter shooting Dion Smith to death. But Terell did not admit to anything even after he was taken to court.
In his September 2018 trial, he continued to maintain his innocence but the jury found him guilty of Dion Smith's murder. He was sentenced to life in prison with 65 years to serve and an additional 15 years for unlawful usage of a firearm.
He continues to remain incarcerated at North Branch Correctional Institution in Cumberland, Maryland.
The upcoming episode of See No Evil will cover this case in more detail.
